Greg Alexander has tears to the ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his left knee

HA Note: "Alexander said he has been diagnosed with tears to the anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his left knee. He said he will undergo season-ending surgery today. He said he was told the recovery period is between six and nine months."

About the bad medical results on his knee, Greg Alexander said:
"I'm pretty disappointed. It's the way it goes sometimes." (HA)

About the play where he got injured, Alexander said:
"It was one of those plays. I tried to get extra yards. (The left cleat) got caught in the ground, and the guy got a good shot on me. It happens sometimes. It's part of the game." (HA)

HA Note: "Because Alexander is a senior and the injury occurred in UH's fourth game, his Warrior career is over. He exceeded the three-game limit needed to apply for a medical hardship."

About how there is nothing more he can do about his situation than have surgery and rehab his knee, Alexander said:
"I'm going into surgery, and then I'll start rehab. There's no sense talking or thinking about it. There's nothing I can do." (HA)

HA Note: "The damage was shown on the MRI, which was taken Thursday night, after the Warriors returned from their road trip. Today's operation will be to repair the torn ACL and MCL. During the procedure, Alexander said, surgeons will determine whether the quarterback will need further surgery on the meniscus and other cartilage."

Feeling bad for Alexander, Mac said:
"I feel really bad for the kid. He's worked so hard. He put in his blood and sweat into it, to become one of the better quarterbacks in the country. Then that happens." (HA)

About the evaluation of Alexander's knee injury, Mac said;
"It wasn't good news. I pray his knee comes out good, and good things happen to him. He's given us everything he's had. He's a great competitor, a great person. I'm just devastated. He sacrificed for the program." (HA)

HA Note: "Entering the Louisiana Tech game, Alexander was leading NCAA Division I-A in total offense (446 yards per game)."

HA Note: "Seven assistant coaches return from Mainland recruiting trips today. A coaches meeting is scheduled for tomorrow to determine how the Warriors will fill the No. 3 quarterback's spot. Inoke Funaki, who moved to running back in spring training, was the starting quarterback when the Warriors defeated Fresno State last season. Fresno State is UH's upcoming opponent."

Asked if Inoke will move back to QB, Mac said:
"At this point, I honestly don't know. I haven't thought about it. I'm going to wait until I get my staff together. I don't want to say something, and not be right." (HA)

HA Note: "Funaki said he has not taken a snap at quarterback since the 2008 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. The other possibility would be to activate a freshman quarterback. David Graves, Cayman Shutter and Corey Nielsen are redshirting this season. Brent Rausch, a fourth-year junior, was the No. 2 quarterback before suffering a broken right pinkie on his throwing hand three weeks ago. He is not scheduled to resume practicing for at least another two weeks."

About how he believes in Bryant Moniz, Mac said:
"Right now, I've got complete confidence in Bryant. He doesn't have as many reps, obviously, as the other guys, but you know he has it. You just look at him, and you know he has it. He's a quarterback. He has those intangibles. He's cool. He's a gamester." (HA)

"He's played and has been getting reps. He didn't have as many (reps) as Greg or Brent (Rausch), but he's a guy who has a lot of talent. You feel bad, but the next guy has to step up." (HSB)

About how losing Alexander to injury is worse than losing the Louisiana Tech game, Mac said:
"To me, this is a lot worse than a loss. To lose a player, that's the toughest thing for me in this game." (HSB)

HSB Note: "Alexander used a redshirt year at Santa Rosa (Calif.) Junior College in 2005. By playing in Wednesday's game, he passed the 25 percent threshold of games played to remain eligible for a medical hardship."

About how he's going to concentrate on graduating from UH, Alexander said:
"I'm deeply disappointed with these results, but it's part of the game and I wish the team the best throughout the rest of the season. After my surgery, I plan on concentrating on my academics so I can stay on pace to graduate next year." (HSB)

Praising Alexander, Mac said:
"He's such a class guy and he's strong. He's positive, he's disappointed, but he's just a class act." (HSB)

"He's worked so hard through last year and in the spring and fall, and elevated himself to become one of the best quarterbacks in the country." (HSB)

Feeling horrible for Alexander, Ron Lee said:
"He did everything we asked of him in the offseason. He got himself ready, he was showing great leadership. This was kind of his year. He had a great start and with eight more games to go ... it's too bad. I feel awful for Greg. It's just a tough deal." (HSB)
