Quotes from Coach McMackin's Weekly Press Conference

About the Central Arkansas game, Mac said:
"We're very happy that we got a win this weekend. Central Arkansas played hard and have an excellent football team. We were a little sloppy in the first half, which I anticipated being the first ball game and playing so many newcomers. We didn't have any takeaways and they had three turnovers which was really the difference in the first half. I liked the way the defense ran and hit. I'm really excited and I believe they have some real potential. The team got better as the game progressed. The effort was outstanding and I liked they way they finished. I'm especially happy with our special teams and punt returning. We had three explosive plays on special teams, a couple of punt and long kickoff return plays." (UH)

Happy with their OL, Mac said:
"I'm really happy about and proud of our offensive line, they are really coming together. We knew that Central Arkansas has a great defensive end named Hart. He got a legit sack and a takeaway that set up their first touchdown. That was the last play that he made." (UH)

Praising how sophomore DE Liko Satele replaced the injured John Fonoti, Mac said:
"John Fonoti is a key injury for us, we're trying to get him ready. One defensive end who…got his opportunity and you always say, if you get your opportunity you make the most of it, was Liko Satele. Liko just played outstanding. He won a starting position with his play last weekend. He's a real talent and he might not have had that opportunity if John had not got hurt. We're really excited about him." (UH)

About how they improved during the game, Mac said:
"We got better as the game went on. We played a lot better in the second half than in the first half obviously, on all three sides of the ball. We definitely expect to get better between this game and the next game. It is a coaching cliché but its one of the true ones. We can look at all our mistakes (and) the best reps you can get are during a game. Now we don't have a bunch of rookies. They have a game under their belt and they're only going to get better." (UH)

About this week's opponent, Washington State, Mac said:
"I know that they are better than last year when we played them. Their quarterbacks and offensive line are better. Defensively they are a young but they got athletes. Offensively they have some really good running backs and receivers. They are going to give us everything we
want." (UH)

About winning the WAC Offensive Player of the Week Award, Greg Salas said:
"It's nice. It's a first for me, so I'm happy... It's good to have a big game. It boosts my confidence a lot, so I'll take that in to the next game." (UH)

About team chemistry and playing his first game at slotback, Salas said:
"As the game went on I got a little more comfortable. The more game reps I get, the more comfortable I'll get. The chemistry of the quarterback and receivers (is better). We worked really hard all summer and it's paid off." (UH)

About his 66-yard catch late in the game, Salas said:
"He (quarterback Greg Alexander) got flushed out of the pocket , so I broke off of my route… he (couldn't) get through his reads anymore, so you have to get open, and I did." (UH)

About how their offense performed against Central Arkansas, Salas said:
"We're definitely still coming together. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot with the turnovers that set us back. You can't get in a rhythm when you're turning the ball over all the time. I think we'll do better the next game." (UH)
