About how Fonoti is "very probable" to play on Friday, Mac said:
"No operation is needed. His attitude is excellent." (HA)
"It just depends on how he responds to treatment. We'll just see how the rehab goes. I'm just thankful he wasn't seriously hurt." (HSB)
HA Note: "Fonoti said he was initially told he suffered a
"hyperextension." Even with that diagnosis, Fonoti remained confident he would play."
Expecting to play on Friday, Fonoti said:
"I'll be there." (HA)
"I'm good. I'll be there Friday." (HSB)
About how he felt that Fonoti would play on Friday, Mac said before the diagnosis:
"He's John Fonoti. He plays." (HA)
When Fonoti's injury was downgraded to a bruise, Mac said:
"John Fonoti is a tough guy. Remember a couple of years ago?" (HA)
HA Note: "In 2007, Fonoti fell off the roof of his family's home while trying to make repairs. He landed feet first, suffering deep bruises. But he recovered quickly, and missed only two games."
Happy that the injury was downgraded, Mac said:
"I thank God he's OK. He's really worked hard." (HA)
HA Note: "Fonoti is the Warriors' only returning full-time defensive starter. According to UH spokesman Derek Inouchi, UH and Cincinnati are tied for the fewest number of returning defensive starters among Division I-A teams. Fonoti, a fifth-year senior, is regarded as one of
the Warriors' best pass-rushers. He overcame personal problems (his mom is a cancer survivor) and academic hurdles to play this season. He did not participate in the three previous practices because of a groin injury."
About how Fonoti was injured during a 3rd-down drill where the players are told to remain in an upright position, Mac said:
"Somebody slipped and fell down, and that happens in football." (HA, HSB)
About how he yelled when he was hit and collapsed to the ground, Fonoti said:
"There was pain right away." (HA)
About how he felt his knee "went backward" but didn't hear a "pop", Fonoti said:
"Everything is in place. I'm OK." (HA)
About practicing at #1 left end while Fonoti was out with injury, Liko Satele said:
"Practicing this week (with the first team) really got me prepared." (HA)
HA Note :"Satele was a fullback/defensive lineman for Word of Life Academy. In 2007, he attended Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn."
About how he was switched to defense, Liko said:
"I wanted to play fullback over there. They switched me to defense." (HA)
HA Note: "He said his parents — father Alvis was a UH linebacker andmother LeeAnn played for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team — encouraged him to transfer to UH. He did not play in 2008 in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. This summer, Brashton Satele lost 26 pounds while participating in a specialized training program in Arizona. After returning to Hawai'i, he put his younger brother on the same strict diet and workout schedule. Liko Satele lost about 10
pounds and now weighs 255."
About how he prefers to be called Liko instead of his first name of Landon, Liko said:
"I only get called by my real first name on the first day of school or when I do something wrong at home." (HA)
HSB Note: "Fonoti had been resting some nagging injuries with the focus on being fresh for the Central Arkansas game. He returned to practice yesterday morning, back with the first unit on the right side of the defensive line. He was hurt during an 11-on-11 period as the Warriors worked on third-down situations. Generally, the offensive and defensive linemen engage at the line but are urged to stay on their feet during such drills. But occasionally bodies fall in the tangle, as was the case yesterday when a teammate landed on Fonoti's knee during a running play."
Praising Liko Satele's play in Fonoti's spot, Mac said:
"Liko Satele has been playing very well. He's got good size, he can run and he's been coming along." (HSB)
About how his older brother Brashton has been helping him prepare, Liko said:
"He helps me a lot, trying to make sure I know all the plays. Sometimes he'll quiz me on it. When we watch NFL games, we always point out stuff, try to watch our positions and try to get better." (HSB)
