Warrior Quotes 10/12/10 (Jeramy Bryant is tied for #1 for INTs in the country, Kiko formation differs from Nevada's pistol)
About comparisons between Nevada's pistol formation and their formation (since they moved the RB 3 yards behind the QB just like Nevada), Bryant Moniz said:
"This is Hawaii. We're different here." (HSA)
"We're still the run-and-shoot. We're not the read-and-whatever-they-are offense. We're still different." (HSA)
HSA Note: "UH offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich said he likes the "symmetry" of aligning the running back directly behind the quarterback. Rolovich said it disguises the direction of the running play, as well as makes it easier for the back to block an on-rushing defender. In previous years, if the back were aligned on the right of the quarterback, defenses would overload the weak side."
About how they changed the name of their formation from the "Colt" to the "kiko", Moniz said:
"It's a good name." (HSA)
HSA Note: "One meaning is "trigger," which gives credit to the pistol. The more preferable meaning is "dot," as in dot of the 'i.' Or, for the Warriors' purposes, the running back is the dot of the I formation."
HSA Note: "Yesterday, McMackin told booster-club members that Moniz is the best quarterback in the nation."
About how Jeramy Bryant was not selected as the WAC defensive player of the week, Rich Miano said:
"What else is new? He's under the radar." (HSA)
About how Jeramy struggled last year against Fresno State, Miano said:
"It was a redemption game for him." (HSA)
About how Jeramy borrowed a coach's laptop to watch videos of Fresno's offense during the road trip, Miano said:
"We can only work with them so many hours each week. He wanted to do extra work. He wanted to watch films. He did that on his own." (HSA)
Jeramy noticed that Fresno State kept trying to set up a sail route to the left side and told Miano:
"I'm going to jump it next time." (HSA)
HSA Note: "Miano gave his conditional blessing: Bryant needed to notify a safety, as insurance. Ryan Colburn threw to the left, and Bryant intercepted."
About how Jeramy knows the tendencies of their opposition, Miano said:
"He doesn't take risks, he takes educated risks. He knows what they're doing. He reads the routes, and he knows when to jump it. He's not doing daring things. He's doing things based on what he's seen on films and what their tendencies are." (HSA)
About knocking down Fresno State's Jermaine Thomas at the end of a 28-yard reception along the left sideline, Greg Salas said:
"I had no other way to go. That was my only option." (HSA)
Salas said that after they collided Thomas:
"went backward." (HSA)
About how Thomas and he exchanged words after the play, Salas said:
"We talked a little bit, but I can't say what he said." (HSA)
