Quotes from Coach McMackin's Weekly Press Conference 11/9/09

About UH's homecoming win over Utah State, Mac said:
"I just want to say that I'm really proud of my players and the coaching staff, and (support staff) for fighting through all the adversity. We were rewarded with a win. And we're going to continue to keep working hard, which is what we've been doing. It's really tested us because we have really become close. And by that I mean that outside influences try to break us apart, but this football team and coaching staff have remained close, and I'm really proud of that.

Our belief and love for one another is united and we're on a mission. It's a tough mission. We got ourselves in this situation. It's not time to smile yet because this is just the first win. We have to work hard and our next focus is New Mexico State. That's where we're at and that's where all of our energy is going." (UH)

About the importance of winning, Mac said:
"Winning is great. You can celebrate for a certain period of time. If you lose, you feel bad for a certain period of time and then you go on. We're at the point where were moving on." (UH)

About the success of their running game, Mac said:
"Our running game is set up by our passing game. And it depends on what schemes they are using. We wanted to run the football to take the pressure off our quarterback. We'll screen the ball or do things so he doesn't have to carry the team on every play like Colt (Brennan). Colt had the experience. This kid (Bryant Moniz) is a sophomore and in his fifth ball game. We had success running the ball so we kept running the ball. We would like to run the ball 18 to 20 times a ball game. But I think we ran it 37 times because we were having success." (UH)

About Leon Wright-Jackson winning the WAC Player of the Week award, Mac said:
"It was great. It really represents our whole offensive team and our whole football team. Running the ball is a physical, tough thing. The offensive line did a great job of blocking, they got him past, he made them miss, and the receivers took over from there. It was really a total combination of things so it does make me feel good that Leon got that. Leon is such a class guy." (UH)

About this week's game balls, Mac said:
"Obviously Leon Wright-Jackson. He did a great job. Blaze (Soares) had nine tackles, a sack, and a tackle or two for losses. Corey (Paredes) had a big game too. But the game balls to me should go to Spencer Smith who was in the hospital the entire day before the game. He proved to the doctors that he was fine and played the whole game. Another guy who should get a game ball is Kealoha Pilares who didn't even have a catch. But he graded out higher than any receiver because of his run blocking and unselfishness of running down the field." (UH)
