Quotes about the Warriors in the Hawaii papers (feature on John Estes making 51 straight starts for UH)

About how John Estes has made 51 consecutive starts at UH, OL coach Gordy Shaw added:
"Since I've been here, he hasn't even missed a practice." (HA)

HA Note: "To be sure, Estes has had his share of ailments. The most significant one was in 2006, when he injured his AC joint in his right shoulder against Oregon State. But that came in the regular-season finale, and he had three weeks to heal before the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl."

About playing in the Hawaii Bowl with his shoulder injury, Estes said:
"I stuck it out and played in the bowl." (HA)

About how working hard in the weight room helps him avoid injury, Estes said:
"You have to do your work in the weight room. You have to take care of your body. You have to play hard and practice hard. Usually when you get tired and lazy, that's when you get hurt." (HA)

HA Note: "Estes said every morning, he tries to do shoulder circles — exercises involving 5- to 10-pound weights. He said the exercises are an efficient warmup that strengthens the rotator cuffs in his shoulders.'

About how Estes works in the weight room to prepare his body to play a full game, Shaw said:
"He treats his body as a temple. He's religious about making sure all of his joints are strong by working out in the weight room. He conditions himself so he always has endurance to finish the game. (HA)

About how Estes plays through minor injuries, Shaw said:
"Probably the most important thing is he doesn't let little injuries hold him back. He doesn't let banged-up ankles, bumped knees, banged-up shoulders, sore necks hold him out." (HA)

About how he wants to play instead of sitting out any practice or game time, Estes said:
"I hate even sitting out in practice. I can't even imagine what it's like sitting out a game. I've had nightmares about coming late to games. It's like the worst feeling. I stick it out and play." (HA)

About the status of their injured players, Mac said:
"I'm anxious to see where they are. I hope they can practice." (HSB)

About staying out of the decision on whether or not the injured players can play, Mac said:
"What I do, and always have, is leave all of that up to the doctors. Because I would not feel good to have somebody do something and get hurt over my decision, because I'm not a doctor." (HSB)

"(Team doctor Andrew) Nichols is working with those guys. They're doing everything they can to get them ready to play. If they can practice that would be great, but we just have to see. If the doctors think there's a chance they can play Saturday, then we'll take them on the trip, treat them, and it'll be a game-time decision." (HSB)

About Jeramy Bryant's return to practice, with Kawika Ornellas doing well while Bryant was out, Mac said:
"(Ornellas has) really been playing well, but it's good to have another corner that's a high-quality guy." (HSB)

About how Bryant Moniz will play is he is able even if he cannot practice this week, Mac said:
"If he can play, he's going to play." (HA)

Mac said that the availability of Salas for the SJSU game is a:
"game-day decision." (HA)

About how Ryan Henry could take Salas' place at slotback, Ron Lee said:
"Ryan Henry has had good practices. He's been getting a lot of reps." (HA)

HA Note: "Lee also said that Pollard, who missed the past five games because of a hairline fracture in his left fibula, is "100 percent." Pollard has been practicing with a light brace on his left shin. But he will play without a brace in the game."

About how they have two plans in case Salas cannot play in the game, Mac said:
"We don't know what Salas' situation is, so we're covering all of our bases." (HA)

About being outscored 86-19 in the 3rd quarter of their 10 games this year (86-9 in their 9 games against D-IA competition), Mac said:
"We ran a study on that. We have to do a better job." (HSB)

HSB Note: "He had his assistants research; the results from the offense coaches came in yesterday, and indicated that turnovers are a source of the post-intermission woes."

About how they led SJSU 17-7 at halftime last year but ended up losing the game after SJSU made some halftime adjustments, Mac said:
"San Jose State always throws a new wrinkle in (after halftime) every week.' (HSB)

About his 3 punts in the NMSU game averaging 57.3 yards, with his final punt going a season-best 65 yards, Alex Dunnachie said:
"It was about time something happened. I hit them well during practice all year, hadn't really been able to do it during the game. ... It was amazing. As soon as I hit I saw it spiral up and it was beautiful." (HSB)

About Dunnachie's struggles this season, special teams coordinator Chris Tormey said:
"I think it's a confidence thing. The thing you have to remember is he's never played football at any level until two months ago, so it's natural he's going to have some growing pains. All along we've known the ability's there, but now it's starting to show through." (HSB)

About believing in his punting ability, Dunnachie said:
"Going onto the field I just try to clear my mind completely. I don't want to be thinking about too many things, just trust myself that I've done the work during the week to get ready for it." (HSB)
