Other Quotes from the Hawaii papers

About walking on to UH, kicker Brian Blumberg said:
"I didn't take a recruiting trip. I didn't have any promises. I just winged it." (HA)

HA Note: "Blumberg, in fact, was offered the chance to join the Warriors as a walk-on and to compete for the placekicking job. Scott Enos won the competition, and has handled all of the placekicking duties in the first nine games. But Enos has been inconsistent in his kickoffs, and he has missed his past three field-goal attempts. This week, UH re-opened the kicking competition. Enos has been told he is not launching his field-goal attempts within the preferred snap-to-contact limit of 1.3 seconds. Blumberg admittedly does not have as powerful a kick as Enos, but he has a quicker approach."

About how he focuses on other aspects of his kicking after suffering an injury to his kicking knee in 2007, Blumberg said:
"Accuracy and speed." (HA)

HA Note: "As a freshman at El Camino that year, a long snap sailed over his head on a punt attempt. After retrieving the ball, Blumberg was struck on his right knee by a defender, causing a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament. Blumberg was able to resume kicking seven months later. But by the then, he was a different kicker."

About how he wasn't as powerful of a kicker after his injury, Blumberg said:
"I lost power. I used to be a power kicker like Scott. I had to flip. Surgery totally spun my game around. I loved kickoffs before. Now I'm a (field-goal) specialist." (HA)

HA Note: "Blumberg played for El Camino last year and, at the recommendation of a kicking coach, his videos were reviewed by Chris Tormey, who coordinates UH's special teams. Tormey offered Blumberg a walk-on invitation in May."

About how his range has improved to up to 50 yards, Blumberg said:
"I'm getting a lot more height and a lot more power. If we're not going to try anything outside of 40 yards, I don't think I can miss. I just want that opportunity." (HA)

HA Note: "Blumberg also is getting a look on kickoffs, as well as safety Kenny Estes, who kicked in high school."

HSB Note: "Enos has handled all of the kicking duties so far. Tormey said the staff is evaluating both the kickoff and place-kicking jobs. Blumberg took most of the reps in the kickoff period yesterday, with backup safety Kenny Estes also getting a turn."

About deciding on their kicker for this week, Chris Tormey said:
"You have to look at the big picture, and consistency is a big part of it. We're going to go with the best guy whoever that is. We've been looking at everything and charting and we'll see how we look at the end of the week." (HSB)

HSB Note: "Enos is 8-for-13 on field goals this season, with two blocked kicks, and 25-for-25 on PATs. Of his 41 kickoffs, five have been touchbacks, with four going out of bounds."

About competing with Brian Blumberg for the kicking jobs, Scott Enos said:
"Brian's a great kicker, and I feel like the job's always open to go out and compete every day,. We've been doing the same thing out there together, making each other better every day, all year long. So nothing's different." (HSB)\

Hoping that they can fit him with smaller padding for his injured left hand, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane said:
"Hopefully, I can wear an MMA glove signed by (BJ Penn lookalikes) Corey Paredes or Mana Silva." (HA)

About the fracture in his left hand last week, R.J. said:
"I'm falling apart. I'm getting old, I'm a senior. I've got to drink my milk, maybe (take) fish oil." (HA)

About how Royce Pollard has been getting more reps in practice and is ready to return from the stress fracture in his leg, Ron Lee said:
"He's ready to go. It doesn't look like it's hurting him, but maybe he's not ready to go 60 plays." (HSB)

About how Jovonte Taylor's playing time on Saturday will be determined by how he is able to practice today, Ron Lee said:
"He needs to get out there (today). He comes to the meetings, he knows what we're doing. But he needs to get the reps at full speed, and the timing with the quarterbacks is also critical." (HSB)

About how they will arrive in Hawaii Friday night and leave right after the game on Saturday, NMSU head coach DeWayne Walker said:
"It's a business trip and that's why we're going to leave on Friday instead of Thursday. I just think where we are right now, it makes sense to go on Friday and keep it business-like more so than vacation-like." (HSB)
