"I love the rain. I'm from Wahiawa. All it does there is rain." (HA)
About how Moniz had a good practice, Rolo said:
"He's very attentive. I think he's excited about the opportunity." (HA)
HA Note: "Rolovich said Moniz has a strong arm, and his scrambling ability presents more offensive options."
About how Moniz has a greater running threat than Alexander, Rolo said:
"What he gives us is a little more athleticism. We need to get him dialed up with the base stuff." (HA)
Praising Moniz's work ethic, Rolo said:
"He's worked hard from where he wasn't really going to get a look and he's slowly built his way to this point and I don't think he'd take his foot off the pedal now. I think Bryant's got a nice feel for the base offense. He throws the ball very well, he's very accurate, and disciplined as far as his decision making. And the pace of his progressions is very good. He's just going to get better and better with more reps." (HSB)
HSB Note: "Moniz's days normally begin at 5 a.m. to make the commute from Wahiawa to Manoa in time for practice. He was in Rolovich's office at 6 yesterday, studying footage of Fresno State. Any time left after practice, classes and meetings, he devotes to his 15-month old daughter, Cali."
About how he tries to spend time with his daughter Cali, Moniz said:
"The few hours I do have, I try to make the most of it. Every minute with her is precious." (HSB)
About taking 2/3 of the practice snaps in passing drills because he's the #1 QB, Moniz said:
"You figure, the more reps you get, the better." (HA)
About how Moniz remains calm under pressure, Mac said:
"He has a really relaxed demeanor, like the game is not going to be too big for him. Every time I've seen him compete, he's under control, and you don't see that a lot." (HA)
Asked about how others perceive him to be calm, Moniz said:
"I guess I never thought I'd make it this far. There's nothing to lose. I already accomplished so much. Now it's all about having fun with your brothers on the field." (HA)
"I don't know too many guys that thrive on stress, so no sense in stressing, just try to stay relaxed, stay calm and have fun. It could be mind-boggling if you let it get to you and stress over it too much or think about it too much. You just have to trust in your program. We've got a lot of athletes around me, so that makes my job easier. I just have to get the ball in their hands and they do the rest." (HSB)
HA Note: "As a high school sophomore in 2004, Moniz led Leilehua to the state title game. As a Fresno City College freshman in 2007, he completed 184 of 331 passes (55.6 percent) for 2,268 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also rushed for two touchdowns."
About how Moniz has had a history of success, Mac said:
"He's been successful everywhere he's been, and I expect him to succeed here. I'm excited for him. He's got a great supporting staff. He has good receivers. And Rolo took the other guy to the top. There's no reason (Rolovich) can't take all of our quarterbacks to the top." (HA)
About how Moniz has a chance to be great, Mac said:
"I think the upside on him is astronomical. I think he can be a great quarterback if he gets his chance, and you know what, he's getting his chance now. He doesn't want it this way, with Greg getting hurt — none of us do. But we've always sort of, in the back of our minds, wondered how far he could go. Now he's going to get the reps and we're going to find out. I'm not saying it's going to jump right out there this first game, because this is his first game. So we're going to be patient with him, but he's got a lot of upside." (HSB)
About how he played in a park league while attending Leeward Community College a year ago and now will be starting for UH, Moniz said:
"I haven't really thought about it much, but that is pretty fast. One year ago, who would know this day would be here? I just went with the flow and put it all in the Lord's hands and whatever happens, happens." (HSB)
About being their emergency QB, Inoke Funaki said:
"I hope I have a good memory. If they need me, I'll be there." (HA)
About how he's trying to get back on the field as early as possible, Brent Rausch said:
"The doctor told me two, three weeks. I'm going to shoot for next week. I'm a pretty fast healer. It didn't hurt too much today. We'll see how it goes." (HA)
Asked when he could return from his injury, starting RT Laupepa Letuli said:
"I'm hoping in about two weeks." (HA)
About how he should be able to play this week, Vaughn Meatoga said:
"I should be fine. I should be practicing soon." (HA)
About suffering a hamstring injury during a practice in Texas, George Daily-Lyles said:
"That was a nice little surprise in Texas." (HA)
About how they will redshirt Daily-Lyles, Mac said:
"He missed four games, and now it will be five." (HA)
About redshirting, Daily-Lyles said:
"I guess it's for the best. We have good linebackers, and I was going to be a backup, anyway. Now I can get a year under my belt to really learn the system." (HA)
HSB Note: "McMackin said linebackers Aaron Brown and George Daily-Lyles will redshirt this season, both due to hamstring injuries. Brown, a junior, played in three games, but had been slowed by the injury since fall camp. Daily-Lyles, a true freshman, made the trip to Louisiana Tech, but didn't suit up. Defensive tackles Geordon Hanohano (neck) and Vaughn Meatoga (ankle) attended yesterday's practice but didn't participate. Neither did offensive tackle Laupepa Letuli, who missed the Louisiana Tech game due to a knee injury."
About how he'll bring up the subject with Fresno State of having atrophy for their annual football game, JD said:
"I think it would be good to have something for the teams to play for." (HA)
