Ryan Grice-Mullins is getting first-team WR reps with the BC Lions

VS = Vancouver Sun

VS Note: "After six games (he wasn't dressed for two others), Grice-Mullen is averaging one catch and 10.3 yards. The Lions just aren't seeing the progress they wanted to see."

VS Note: "When the Dreadhead's confidence failed him after a serious of drops, Buono shrewdly moved Grice-Mullen to returning duties to tap some of that game-turning potential. It's worked out splendidly. Now, Buono's fantasy difference-maker could be ready to make some noise as a wide receiver, judging by the inordinate number of first-team reps he's getting this week in practice."

About how he has his confidence back and has been getting first-team reps at WR in preparation for their game on Friday, RGM said:
"We'll see when game time comes. I feel good. I feel back to my normal self. I was just in a slump, just like any basketball or baseball player. It does happen. I feel I'm out of it now." (VS)

About how RGM could be a weapon at WR, GM and head coach Tony Buono said:
"We want to have more explosions, more weapons. It can't always be 10 yards, 12 yards [pass plays]. We want a guy who can turn a two-yard route into a 50-yard gain. Sometimes, you just have to find ways to get the ball in his hands." (VS)

VS Note: "Ah yes, the hands. It was his early lack of surehandedness that delayed Grice-Mullen's arrival. But he took the lead in trying to change that. Weeks of remedial training, working with backup quarterback Travis Lulay after practice and fielding punts from Sean White during practice breaks, seem to have cured him of the dropsies."

About the extra work RGM put in to stop dropping passes, QB Travis Lulay said:
"He came up to me and asked if I would stick around for some extra work. It was big of Ryan. He knew he wanted to improve. He's a laid-back, quiet guy. But the desire to really be good is there." (VS)

About how they could be using RGM more at WR and not as much as returner (the starter before he was injured and RGM took over), Buono said:
"It's about putting the best possible team on the field that gives you the most options." (VS)

VS Note: "Though the coach would like to use Grice-Mullen as much as he can, Buono is cognizant of burnout, citing the case of Frank Cutolo. He was the CFL rookie of the year in 2003 — Buono's first year in B.C. — handling the ball 100 times as a returner and 64 more as a pass receiver. Cutolo was never that prominent again."

About how they don't want to overuse RGM, Buono said:
"He was a young guy, not big, a rookie that we beat to death. Sometimes you don't do things as smart as you should." (VS)
