QB coach Nick Rolovich will take over the play-calling duties for UH (possibly with others helping out)

Asked if he welcomed the chance to call the plays, Rolo said:
"I do. I have to." (HA)

"I planned on doing it at some point in my career. So, why not now? I've just got to be ready." (HA)

Rolo said that his new responsibility:
"comes with pressure. There's no time to celebrate. I haven't done anything yet." (HA)

About play-calling duties, Rolo said:
"you need to know your opponent, and the ability and potential of your offensive players, and have a feel for that mindset. Hopefully, we can have that killer mindset. A lot of the run-and-shoot is read stuff. It's not set routes, where there's more pressure on play-calling." (HA)

About calling plays from the sidelines instead of in the coaches box (where offensive coordinator Ron Lee will continue to be), Rolo said:
"I've never spent time in the box. I think there's a benefit to being on the field. You can tell the players' mindset from there." (HA)

"I enjoy feeling the emotions of the team on the sideline. Are they ready, do they have that killer instinct, are they ready to go right now with something big? Or do we need to keep it simple for a minute and get some confidence up? I like getting that sense from the sidelines." (HSB)

About how he'll script the first several plays like JJ did, Rolo said:
"I thought that calmed me as a player knowing what's coming next." (HA)

Looking forward to the strategic battles with play-calling, Rolo said:
"I enjoy chess. I like it much better than checkers. I think it's more complicated. You have to think steps ahead. In checkers, you can think ahead, but that double jump helps you out. There are no double jumps in football. It's a slow building to that point where you hurt them. Football is like having three or four chess boards out. You're setting up this play to be the big play." (HA)

About having fun with the play-calling, Rolo said:
"It'll be fun if we win." (HA)

HA Note: "Rolovich said he will rely on Lee and running backs coach Brian Smith, who will be in the box during games, to provide observations on opposing team's formations and tendencies. Offensive line coach Gordy Shaw, who will be on the field, will offer input on running plays."

HSB Note: "Rolovich will call plays from the sidelines with input from offensive coordinator Ron Lee and offensive line coach Gordy Shaw, who will assist with the running game. While Rolovich will have a greater voice in play selection, heeding the input of the other coaches coming through his headset will be a major part of the job."

About how Ron Lee and Gordy Shaw will have input into calling plays, Rolo said:
"I think there's a listening quality to all three of us and discussions have been very good this year. We're just going to have to stay ahead with our thoughts and really become one with this whole thing." (HSB)

About how the offensive coaches will work together, Mac said:
"It's going to be a team effort. Ron Lee will coordinate the practices (for the offense) and run the offensive meetings. Rolovich will call the plays." (HA)

HSB Note: "The game-week routine remains the same, with Lee taking the lead in crafting the game plan, which dictates the play calling during the game."

About how Ron Lee and he decided that Rolo will make the play calls with help from Gordy Shaw for running plays, Mac said:
"He and I mutually decided that we'll make the game plan and Rolo, with the help of Gordy in running situations, will make the call. Ron Lee is an unselfish, team guy and I couldn't be happier with him. It's really his decision and I think it'll make us better on the offensive side of the ball." (HSB)

About how Rolo understands UH's offense, Mac said:
"That's why I hired Rolo (as quarterbacks coach). He played quarterback in this system. He knows the offense inside and out." (HA)

KGMB Note: "The University of Hawaii football team is making a change to its play calling. Offensive Coordinator Ron Lee is handing over those game day duties to quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich and offensive line coach Gordy Shaw."

About how he's communicating with Ron Lee better this year, Rolo said:
"The communication is a lot better than last year, I think, I feel much more comfortable with Ronnie. I know what he's thinking a lot more than last year; we're going to work together a lot but it is an opportunity and I'm ready for it." (KGMB)

About Rolo taking over the play calling duties, Ron Lee said:
"(Rolovich) knows this package, knows the offense. I think he's very talented. He's always had a big input as far as the offense. He knows what we're doing. It's always been a group deal. ... He's only coached for a couple years, but he's really got a good feel for the game." (HSB)

Note: HSB says that Ron Lee will still have the authority to call plays.

KGMB Note: "Coach Lee says his priorities will be making adjustments to the receivers during the game instead of afterwards. While Rolovich and Shaw have increased their work load, Coach Mack says Lee will still have final say over what plays are called during the game."

About how things won't change much for him under this new arrangement, Gordy Shaw said:
"It's not going to be any different for me than it was before. Ron's still the coordinator, and we're still making the game plan throughout the week with his direction and his leadership. Ron's always in communication with all of us, so he's still the coordinator and if he sees something and sees a play that's really good, that's going to get called." (HSB)

About how his trust in QB Greg Alexander will help him with his play calling, Rolo said:
"What helps is I can trust where his eyes are going to be. I can take it to a different part of the coverage and work on the next play or three plays down the line. I don't need to just make sure he's reading the right thing." (HSB)

About how the 30-year-old Rolo has bonded with the players, Greg Alexander said:
"He's a good coach. He can communicate with us very well. He played in the system, and that helped a lot." (HA)

About how Rolo was as a QB at UH, Brian Smith (currently UH RB coach and formerly UH starting C and Rolo's roommate) said:
"Rolo was very confident as a quarterback. He was a leader. I'm sure he'll get Greg (Alexander) to be the same way. Rolo has our full confidence as a staff. He has the players' confidence, too." (HA)
