Special teams looking for new players

During their kickoff drills, Ikaika Malloe repeatedly shouted:
"We're looking for the five craziest guys on this field." (HSB)

About how they had 20 players competing for the 5 open positions on their kickoff team, Malloe said:
"We had 20 guys trying out for five spots and we're going to find the five craziest guys." (HSB)

About how Richard Torres stood out in their kickoff drills, special teams coordinator Ikaika Malloe said:
"One guy who really surprised me on kickoff coverage was Richard Torres. He's the guy who's willing to knock himself out to hit the (blocking) wedge. Those are the type of mentality guys that I want on kickoff. I asked for the five craziest guys. Right off the bat, he's one of them." (HA)

HA Note: "For the first time this season, the Warriors had "live" kickoff drills — full-contact plays that did not involve kick returners."

About being their gunner on the left side, Torres said:
"You just run straight for the ball." (HA)

About how last year's top kickoff defenders, Ryan Keomaka (5'9") and Guyton Galdeira (5'7"), inspired him, the 5'7" 165-pound Torres said:
"They'd go hard and try to knock people down. Hopefully, I'll be like that one day." (HA)

About how he goes all out on special teams, Torres said:
"When you're a small guy you cannot be scared. You just have to use your heart and go all out. If you're scared, you're just going to get hurt. Might as well go all out. It's open for everybody, so you just have to do your best and go full speed." (HSB)

About turning down a scholarship offer from Western Oregon to join UH as a walk-on, Torres said:
"Oregon is beautiful, but there's nothing like home." (HA)

HSB Note: "Torres is also running with the second team at nickel back on defense and came up with an interception in 7-on-7 drills and forced a fumble in the team period."

After working out as kicker yesterday, Kenny Estes said:
"I was kind of surprised when Coach Mack said my name." (HA)

HA Note: "Estes, who has kicked a 50-yarder while "just playing around" during training camp. Estes was an All-State soccer player at Waimea High School."

HSB Note: "Senior Dan Kelly and freshman Brett Symonds rotated on kickoff duty in the coverage drill."

About competing for a spot on their kickoff team, reserve RB Corey Paredes said:
"It's a headache job, but I love it." (HSB)

HSB Note: "The Warriors ran sets of four plays - third and 3, 6, 10 and 13 - with the defense getting the better of the action for most of the morning. The defense "won," or prevented a first down, on 20 plays in the 11-on-11 team period, and the offense converted seven times. Greg Salas was the most productive of the UH receivers, picking up three first downs. Safety Erik Robinson had an interception of a deep pass and linebacker Po'okela Ahmad picked off a throw tipped by defensive end Elliott Purcell."
