Quotes about JJ's new contract offer

HF said that he planned to offer JJ a contract with a:
"minimum five years. We are working with the university (administration) on some things within the salary ranges and that needs to be determined first." (HA)


Asked about his new contract, JJ said:
"I don't have any comment on that stuff. When the time's right, something will happen." (HA)


Asked if UH could offer JJ $1 mil per year, HF said:
"I don't know. I don't know what the number is. That's what we have to figure out. It is nice to know where you can go before you finish negotiating. We'll see where they (the regents) want to go." (HA)


About trying to get a salary range from the regents before starting negotiations with JJ, HF said:
"We don't want to be hamstrung (in negotiations), so we'll go do the ranges like we did with basketball." (HA)


About how it hasn't been decided yet whether or not UH will pay JJ's entire salary or if donations would be used to pay for part of JJ's contract again, HF said:
"It all depends upon where we end up." (HA)
Note: I cannot understand this. Why wouldn't UH want to get donations for JJ's contract? JJ has to be one of the most popular people with the donors, and he drives the engine that typically funds the bulk of an Athletic Department...it would seem to be a lot easier to get donors to chip in for JJ's salary than it would to get them to give the Athletic Department money without knowing where/how their money would be spent!
