Offensive Coordinator Ron Lee will not call the plays anymore!

HSB Note: "Quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich and offensive line coach Gordy Shaw will call the plays from the sidelines beginning with Saturday's game at Washington State. Lee will continue to provide input from the coaches' booth while monitoring the receivers and still has overall responsibility for the offense."

About how he needs to coach the receivers instead of calling the plays, Ron Lee said:
"We'll still all work together. It's a team effor. I have to concentrate on the receivers. I have to watch the receivers. That is the priority now. When you're calling the plays it's a different feel. I suggested after watching the film that this would be best for the group. (UH head coach Greg McMackin) agreed. ... This will help the offense a lot." (HSB)

HSB Note: "Lee said the more critical part of the job comes inpreparing the game plan during the week."

About how Ron Lee is still UH's offensive coordinator, Mac said:
"Ron Lee is still my offensive coordinator. And he called the winning touchdown (last week), so I'm pretty happy with him." (HSB)

HSB Note: "Rolovich is in his second season as quarterbacks coach and has relayed the calls from the sidelines. Shaw is in his first season as offensive line coach and was offensive coordinator at South Dakota last year."

About Rolo calling plays, Ron Lee said:
"(Rolovich is) fine with it. He sees it like we all do and we work well together." (HSB)

HSB Note: "Craig Stutzmann assisted Lee with the Warriors' receivers as a graduate assistant last season. He accepted a full-time job as receivers coach at Portland State shortly before the start of fall camp."

About how it is hard to be WR coach and call the plays, Ron Lee said:
"What I found last season and now is it's hard to coach the receivers and call the plays. You don't find all the angles." (HSB)

About how he wants to be able to make adjustments with the WRs during the game, Ron Lee said:
"Preparation is one thing, and we thought we prepared well. But we need to execute, too." (HSB)

HSB Note: "It looks like a way less than ideal situation at least partly caused by the Warriors not having enough coaches working on offense.

There are only four full-time assistants: Lee, Rolovich, Shaw and running backs coach Brian Smith. Meanwhile, the defense has regular staffers Dave Aranda (line), Cal Lee (coordinator/linebackers), Rich Miano (secondary), Chris Tormey (safeties) and George Lumpkin (ends). The lone graduate assistant, Michael Smith, is assigned to defense. The director of football operations doesn't coach on the field, but Tony Tuioti is another defense guy. And, of course, McMackin — defense, all his long career.

That's four offensive strategists compared to eight defensive minds in the football offices.

Craig Stutzmann was a huge help as the de facto receivers coach last year, even as a graduate assistant. When he joined McMackin's charter staff, the thought was that he'd quickly prove worthy of a regular staff position — and he did, but it didn't work out. The two offseason openings were filled by veterans Shaw and Tormey. Stutzmann took a real job coaching the receivers at Portland State, one where they actually pay you some money."
