About how he is healthy now, just in time for training camp, Ashley Lelie said:
"My leg is not bothering me. That was my main concern coming into camp after missing out on the OTAs. That’s good now, so I can focus on everything else. I just want to establish myself on the team during this camp. The first part is getting a spot, and then you go from there." (SF49ers.com)

49ers WR coach Jerry Sullivan praised Lelie:
"I see a guy who is really into it out there. He's worked on his route techniques and I think he’s getting better. I like his attitude, obviousy, he’s got some speed. We’re refining some elements at this time and he’s definitely working to get better. He’s a vertical guy and has played a lot of football and he should add to the core we've already got here. He'll give us some of his strengths and hopefully we can create some new ones that he doesn’t know he has." (SF 49ers.com)

SF Note: "Ashley had serious doubts about pursuing football at the collegiate or professional level when he was younger. His freshman coach in high school cut Ashley for being too skinny. The next year, his family moved from California to Hawaii during the football season, so again he sat out. His first year in organized football was as a high school junior, when he was involved in an offense that rarely threw the ball. When it came to his senior year, the only interest he received was from Oregon and Hawaii, with the latter offering Ashley to join the team as a walk-on. Ashley decided to quit momentarily, but his father urged him to give football at Hawaii a try, which ended up being one of the best pieces of advice he had ever received. but it did really help.”
