49ers.com Note: "With Arnaz Battle and Darrell Jackson sitting out the morning practice by design, wide receiver Ashley Lelie saw more reps with the first unit, and made the morning highlight reel during a move-the-offense session. Outside of a quarterback scramble by Alex Smith, Lelie accounted for all of the yardage on the drive with three passes coming his way from the 49ers starting quarterback."
Happy to have been able to work in practice with Alex Smith, Lelie said:
“It’s been good to get some more time working with Alex. He does throw a little differently than Trent (Dilfer), so it’s good just to get that timing down.” (49ers.com)
Happy to have made it through training camp (his first camp that he was healthy enough to not miss a single practice) despite the quad injury that had him miss most of the off-season, Lelie said:
“I haven’t been bothered by the leg at all, so I’ve really benefited from being out here and able to go through practice. Everything has come along, so much since I first got here. When I watch film, it’s just like night and day and Coach Sullivan is still on me like he was on day one, making sure I do everything perfectly and that’s really helped me become a better player.” (49ers.com)
About continually trying to improve, Lelie said:
“Each week I’m just looking to get better. That’s the goal of every preseason game so that when you get to the regular season, you are ready to go.” (49ers.com)
About competing with Taylor Jacobs for the #3 WR spot, Lelie said:
“Competition brings success, everyone is just competing and that’s pushing everyone to play better. I think however it ends up that the competition right now is really going to show when the season gets going. It’s just making our whole position better.” (49ers.com)
Blaming his long stride for an incomplete pass in the last game, Lelie said:
"I think with my stride being so long, I probably got down the field too far. It was supposed to take six steps, but my six steps may be different from somebody else's six steps." (insidebayarea.com
IBA Note: "In the first half there were two receptions, the first for 20 yards, when he was wide open, and the second for 14 yards. There was an incompletion that Smith threw behind Lelie that both blamed on, of all things, the 6-foot-3 Lelie's Tommie Smith-like stride."
Agreeing that Lelie's stride threw off his pass, QB Alex Smith said:
"He is different. His stride ... can kind of throw off those timing routes. I really hadn't been in a game with him until (Saturday)." (insidebayarea.com)
Taking responsibility for his struggles the past few years, Lelie said:
"The last couple of years it seemed kind of like the world was against me. But I have to look back at a lot of that and say I brought it on myself with the decisions I made. It was my fault I held out during camp and didn't get traded until (the end of) camp." (Insidebayarea.com)
