Warrior Quotes 11/1/10 (Interview with Harris Voter Bob Wagner)

About how their success can be attributed to their hard work over the summer, Mana Silva said:
"We started to turn it around against Charleston Southern. But, really, it began in the summer. This was our best summer." (HSA)

HSA Note: "There was 100 percent participation in the offseason conditioning program, with newcomers and mainland residents spending at least six weeks training in Manoa."

About their 100% participation in their offseason conditioning program, Silva (who was raised on the Big Island) said:
"As bad as some of us wanted to go home. It was better to stay here and train together as a team." (HSA)

About a source of their motivation, Vaughn Meatoga said:
"We play for the people of Hawaii." (HSA)

About carrying the Hawaiian flag when they run onto the field before games, Bryant Moniz said:
"I take a lot of pride being from the islands, being Hawaiian. One day, I had the idea I would run out with the Hawaiian flag. Ever since then, it's making a tradition." (HSA)

HSA Note: "Moniz said it was conditioning coach Tommy Heffernan's idea to plant the flag on a stand at midfield."

About how he borrowed the flag from his neighbor in Wahiawa, Moniz said:
"He used it on his truck cruises. I asked him if I could use it for one weekend. It had such a good review, I haven't given it back." (HSA)

About how someone will continue the tradition after he graduates, Moniz said:
"After I graduate, we'll have the passing of the flag. We'll give it to some other guy." (HSA)

About going from #113 in turnover margin last year to #7 in the country this season, Mana Silva said:
"We're about making plays." (HSA)

About the 26 turnovers the team has forced this season (leading to 108 points this season, 30% of their scoring), Corey Pardes said:
"It is why we are winning." (HSA)

About how some people think that it is hard to play defense on a team with a run-and-shoot offense because the defense gets back on the field so quickly, Rich Miano said:
At UH this year the mind-set looks at it another way: "With an offense like ours, it means the defense just gets more chances to make big plays, force turnovers." (HSA)

About how Harris Interactive College Football Poll voters are not supposed to reveal their vote, former UH head coach Bob Wagner (a Harris voter) said:
"We don't divulge anything." (HSA)

About how he voted for UH, Wagner said:
"Yeah, I voted for Hawaii. I voted for them last week, too." (HSA)

Asked what number he voted for UH, Wagner said:
"I don't remember." (HSA)

Asked how he ranked Boise State, Wagner said:
"Very high. ... All I know is they beat Oregon the last time they played. I know it was a different Oregon team, but if my recollection is correct, Boise and Ohio State are the only teams that have beaten Oregon (going back to last year).  Boise doesn't get enough credit for playing really good defense." (HSA)

Asked why UH is still out of the top 25, Wagner said:
"What happens is a slow start makes a big difference." (HSA)

About how the Colorado loss hurts UH with the voters, Wagner said:
"I knew they did some good things (at Colorado).  Most people just know they lost to Colorado and Colorado isn't very good." (HSA)

About how UH can win at Boise on Saturday, Wagner said:
"I would think so. They've shown they can score points and slow people down. Having an experienced quarterback who is talented helps. You're going to win a lot of games if you're plus (on turnovers). We only lost one or two when we won the turnover battle, and that was San Diego State with Marshall Faulk.  The (Hawaii) offense is taking better care of the ball this year. I would be surprised if they win the turnover battle by two and don't win. The problem is Boise doesn't turn it over much.  It does help Boise that they've got those extra days, but I think Hawaii has an excellent chance." (HSA)

About how UH is more balanced now on offense because of their ability to run the ball, Wagner said:
"There's an old adage, when you go on the road you pack your defense and special teams. And the ability to run the ball. The offense is running the ball some, and they're not turning the ball over. It's a much more efficient offense and they're playing defense." (HSA)

About how voters told him that they would have voted UH higher in 1992, but they voted before they knew that UH beat Pittsburgh 36-23 in their final regular-season game, Wagner said:
"We were behind at halftime and they were already asleep when we came back to win." (HSA)

About how everybody will be paying close attention to UH this week when they play Boise State, Wagner said:
"They'll certainly get their share of exposure this week." (HSA)
