Quotes before the UH-Louisiana Tech game 10/2/10
About how Bryant Moniz is helpful to their receivers, Kealoha Pilares said:
"Moniz is something else. I don't know how he does it. He's a receiver-friendly quarterback, if that means anything. He kind of sees formations from a receiver's standpoint." (HSA)
About how the receivers and Moniz read the coverage simultaneously for their PoCo play, Pilares said:
"We're reading the defense, and Moniz is reading me. The coverage has maybe three routes we can run. Depending on that, (Moniz) can read my body language. Just from that, he knows where to throw." (HSA)
HSA Note: "In last week's rout of Charleston Southern, Pilares made two scoring catches on PoCo plays. Moniz made the throws while looking at Pilares' back."
About reading how the receivers will run their routes, Moniz said:
"It's a sixth sense. I developed an ability to read their body language, read their routes. I must have seen them run a million routes from last year to now. I have to read the defense, too." (HSA)
About the offense that he is installing at La Tech, Sonny Dykes (who based his offense with aspects from his times coaching under Mike Leach at Texas Tech, Hal Humme at Kentucky and Mike Stoops at Arizona) said:
"It's an offense that's similar to Hawaii's. It's different in some ways, but we use four-wide-receiver sets. It's still a work in progress. We're not executing our offense as well as (the Warriors) are quite yet, but we're heading in the right direction." (HSA)
About changing his starting QB so many times and now starting his #4 QB, Dykes said:
"When you make a drastic change, like we did with the spread offense, it takes some time. Your quarterback has to come along. He's going through multiple reads. A lot of times in play-action offenses, there's a little more of, 'Hey, throw the ball to this guy on this particular route.' In our offense, all five receivers can catch the ball on any given play. There's a transition that needs to take place. It takes time to recruit the players you need to run this thing successfully. We're in the beginning stages of it." (HSA)
About starting Tarik Hakmi in this game, Dykes said:
"He's getting more comfortable every day. As you can tell, he hasn't practiced a lot." (HSA)
About how opposing teams refuse to kick the ball to him, Philip Livas said:
"When I get it, I just follow the blocks." (HSA)
About how he retained most of their defensive coaches and didn't change much on that side of the ball, Dykes said:
"Statistically, we're not great, but I think our guys have played better. I'm happy with the way we're playing on defense right now." (HSA)
About how it is hard for them to complete the 9 route, a straight-ahead sprint by the wideout, Royce Pollard said that if it is completed:
"it could be a game-changer. The (cornerback) is trying to squeeze the receiver to the sideline. The mathematical degrees of it makes it tough. It has to be the perfect throw." (HSA)
About how they completed a 9 route for a 41-yard gain against Charleston Southern, Pollard said:
"It was something on our to-do list. I'm glad we did it." (HSA)
Mack said that:
"one of our goals is to win the WAC." (HSA)
About how the winner of this game will be tied for first in the WAC and the loser will be tied for last, Mack said:
"The winner of this game is going to be either at the top of the ledger or the bottom of the ledger. You want to start at the top." (HSA)
