Davone Bess actually signed a *3-year* ($9 million) contract extension
SFSS = South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Praising Bess' 8-yard reception that let their game-winning drive continue, Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said:
"The play Bess makes in overtime now, now that's a tremendous play. You want to talk about quarterback friendly, that's as good a play as you're going to see just moving without the ball. It's a tremendous play; he catches it and he gets the first down. It was a neat thing to watch." (SFSS)
About Bess earning a big contract extension after joining them as an undrafted free agent, Sparano said:
"It's great for a lot of reasons. Here's a great example of me being able to point to and saying there's a guy right there that, you're an undrafted free agent and here's a guy that we rewarded; he deserves it." (SFSS)
SFSS Note: "Bess is on target to record the most receptions by a Dolphin in his first three seasons in the NFL. With his four receptions on Sunday, Bess has 155 catches for 1,591 yards and passed Oronde Gadsden for third on that list. He needs seven catches to pass tight end Randy McMichael for second place on the list and 10 to pass Chris Chambers for first all-time."
About how Bess earned his success through hard work, Sparano said:
"There was no easy way for Davone to do this. He did it through hard work and taking good coaching." (SFSS)
"Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess received a three-year, $9 million contract extension, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Tuesday. Some had reported the deal, signed over the weekend, was a two-year deal." (NFL.com)
Update from the Palm Beach Post (nice raise from the $470k Bess is making this year!):
"Davone Bess has received a three-year extension through 2013 that will pay him base salaries totaling $5.88 million, according to NFLPA records.
Bess, an undrafted free agent out of Hawaii in 2008 who has turned into one of the Dolphins’ best players on offense, will receive base salaries of $1,013,333 in 2011, $2,233,333 in 2012 and $2,633,334 in 2012."
ESPN mentioned Bess' signing bonus:
"In addition to his usual $470,000 base salary for this season, Bess received a $3 million signing bonus. His base salaries for coming years will be $1.01 million, $2.23 million and $2.63 million."
