Feature articles on today's Pro Day for UH

About how he went from 230 pounds in January to 200 pounds for UH's Pro Day, cutting his body fat from 20% to 9%, Jayson Rego said:
"I want to be the best I can be." (HA)

HA Note: "Each Division I-A school is entitled to a combine-like event that serves as an audition in front of National Football League scouts, general managers and personnel directors. Because of Hawai'i's isolation, UH is allowed to stage its Pro Day on the West Coast. UH associate head coach Rich Miano, who is the Warriors' pro liaison, tries to schedule the event the day after Southern California's Pro Day, which usually draws scores of scouts. Pro Day is supposed to be limited to a school's draft-eligible players. But Miano has worked out exemptions to allow some former Warriors to make hana-hou appearances, such as running back Nate Ilaoa, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007. Center John Estes, left tackle Aaron Kia and linebacker Blaze Soares are widely regarded as the former Warriors with the best chances to be drafted or receive free-agent contracts."

About working out with trainer Chad Ikei in Arizona for the past 2 months, Rego said:
"I'm going to leave it all out there and see what happens." (HA)

About his great disappointment that John Estes was not invited to the NFL combine, Rich Miano said:
"In the 12 years I've been here, I've never been as disappointed as John Estes not being invited to the combine. So I think for him, it's a huge day, which is going to bring attention, and more scouts and more personnel people for the rest of our Warriors." (HSB)

About how they have been preparing for the Pro Day ever since their season ended, Blaze Soares said:
"It's what we've been fighting for since our last game. My dream was always to be an NFL player and it boils down to this one shot." (HSB)

About how John Estes is a great NFL prospect, his agent Kenny Zuckerman said:
"He's going to be a great get for a team. There's been a lot of interest. He had a great East-West week. I think he showed he is able to handle 320, 340-pound guys. He has such great technique, great hands and balance. He's rarely on the ground." (HSB)

About having Elliott Purcell and Tank Hopkins sit out spring practice as they recover from offseason surgery, Mack said:
"We just don't want to take any chances. We're not going to push anyone that's injured." (HSB)
