"I want to play as soon as possible, especially now that our backs are against the wall." (HSB)
About being careful to not return until he's able to help the team, Torres said:
"I don't want to push it. If I'm not going to go full speed, I won't be able to help our team anyway, so I'm trying to get to full speed." (HSB)
About how losing Torres hurt UH in the Nevada game, Mac said:
"He was really a key. They run the option, and early in the game we had a pretty good scheme and feel for it. We were keying a certain person and we caught (Nevada quarterback Colin) Kaepernick a couple of times for losses and really forced them into doing some other things. Then when he got hurt we really didn't have anybody to replace him in that position who had the reps to use that particular scheme." (HSB)
Praising how Kawika Ornellas played against Nevada, Rich MIiano said:
"Kawika played outstanding. We're real pleased with his progress and couldn't be happier with the way he played." (HSB)
Pleased with how Kawika Ornellas was not noticed in the Nevada game, Mac said:
"You didn't hear Kawika's name, and he played the whole game, every snap. That's the kind of corner you like, that you never hear his name." (HA)
"Kawika did a very good job." (HA)
HA Note: "Ornellas did not allow a big play on his side. Of the 70 snaps, Ornellas received two minus grades (and no double-minus demerits) for a near-perfect score. The minus grades were for technical errors, such as aligning to one side of a receiver instead of the preferred side."
About how he was ready to start on defense, the freshman Ornellas said:
"Maybe the night before I thought about (making his first start) for 30 seconds. But it's already game seven so it wasn't a big deal. I felt comfortable with the techniques, and I felt comfortable with the game plan, so I was confident going in. ... I might have technically been a rookie, but I'm not a rookie any more." (HSB)
About how he was not nervous when making his first college start, Ornellas said:
"Not at all." (HA)
About how he ignored the pain from tendinitis in the past, Ornellas said:
"I never really did anything about it. I just worked through it." (HA)
About running extra sprints after practice, Ornellas said:
"I have to get my wind. I need it if I want to play all four quarters." (HA)
About how their young players are ready to play now that they are already finished with more than half of the season, Mac said:
"We're all veterans now. We've been through seven games. You saw (freshman defensive back) Lewis (Walker) make a play and Kawika played the whole game. To play the option you've got to play man, so those DBs were left out there a lot. ... I thought some of our young guys did really a good job." (HSB)
About how three players were removed from their travel roster due to poor grades (none were starters), Mac said:
"Academics is our No. 1 thing. Graduating players is a top thing. There were some guys who weren't working hard enough on it. Before we can take them on trips, they have to do the work first." (HA)
"I'd say 99 percent of this team is working their tail off. That's really helped our APR. But if somebody doesn't believe in that, it hurts the program, and they're not going to play football." (HA)
HA Note: "He said the three players are academically eligible, and they remain on the team. But their academic struggles this semester raised concerns."
About his faith in Aaron Kia, Mac said:
"Quite honestly, Kia's been playing good. He's had some calls against him. But he's been doing a good job all year. I'm not down on him at all, or worried about him." (HA)
