Pregame quotes for the Hawaii - New Mexico State game 11/14/09

About how they are not overconfident going into the NMSU game, Mac said:
"We're 3-6. How can you get over-confident?" (HA)

About how this game is important, especially for their bowl chances, Mac said:
"This is an important game for us, more important than last week's game. We got by last week's game." (HA)

"Every game is more important than the last. We just have to do what we do and take care of our own business." (HSB)

HA Note: "The Aggies are 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. They have lost their last three games. They are 0-5 against the Warriors. The Aggies have struggled mightily on offense, averaging 11.8 points per game. Their biggest output was 21 points, in a three-point victory over Division I-AA Prairie View A&M. They have scored 10 points in their last three games."

About how they are taking NMSU seriously, Corey Paredes said:
"We're not over-confident, and we're not underestimating anybody. We're preparing for New Mexico State. We know they're a good team. We've been working hard and watching a lot of tape and trying to get better." (HA)

Vaughn Meatoga said that last week's win:
"reminded us how good we can be. We needed that." (HA)

About his 62-yard run on a Tampa Right play against Utah State, LWJ said that:
"we showed what we can do when we work together." (HA)

HA Note: "The streak pattern is the most difficult of throws because it involves distance, angle and arc. Colt Brennan completed about 45 percent of those throws in 2006, when he set the NCAA's single-season record for efficiency. Tim Chang, in his best year, was a little under 40 percent. This year, Greg Alexander completed 25 percent of those throws. Moniz, who is excellent on post and crossing throws, has completed one of 10 passes on streak passes. The coaches are not concerned because Moniz has the strength to throw deep. But with a smaller receiver, such as Taylor, he needs to throw with a higher arc. Moniz has shown improvement in that area this week. The most effective drill? Throwing passes into garbage cans."

About how Utah State completed a hitch-and-go against him in the second quarter of the Utah State game when he overplayed the first break, Lametrius Davis said:
"They threw over my head. I knew they would come back to it." (HA)

About how he deflected the pass when Utah State tried the same route again, Davis said:
"You have to learn from your mistakes." (HA)

Rich Miano said that Davis' pass breakup was:
"as good a play as you'll see in college football." (HA)

About how Davis (who came to UH from Butte Junior College in January) has been improving, Miano said;
"I wish we had the luxury to redshirt the JC guys. There are so many different techniques and coverages that we do compared to what they've done in the past. But we don't have that luxury. That's why it's good to see that every week he's getting better. He's big enough, fast enough, strong enough to be a big-time player for us. You can see the maturation every week. You can see him expecting to make plays. He's getting the confidence and swagger. The ability has always been there." (HA)

About how their run defense has improved as the season has gone on, Mac said:
"You get better in games because that's where you really see the run. Where you see it is against the Fresno States, the Boise States and the Louisiana Techs and you get better at playing it because it's a different tempo." (HSB)

About how they are improving against the run, Corey Paredes said:
"I think were getting better at it. (The defensive line is) getting off the ball and they're clogging up holes so the linebackers can scrape and make the tackle. ... We're doing our assignments better, we're more gap sound." (HSB)

About starting Jeff Fleming at QB against UH, NMSU head coach DeWayne Walker said:
"I thought he does a better job of getting rid of the ball. That's kind of been our issue, getting rid of the ball, getting back to our quick game and some of the things we were doing pretty good earlier in the year. I think we've been more than fair with both quarterbacks in our first nine games and these last four we want to finish up on a good note, so we're going to go with Jeff and hopefully that will bring some more continuity to the offense." (HSB)

About how their offense is improved, Ron Lee said:
"Everybody is getting more comfortable with what they're doing, Mo is getting more reps and we're playing a lot faster. The timing, the speed, they're getting better every day. He knows the routes, he knows the speed of the receivers. It's starting to come together." (HSB)

About the challenge posed by UH's offense, Walker said:
"This is going to be an I.Q. game for our defensive staff for sure to try to keep up with these guys." (HSB)

About how he likes the green pants and white jersey combination that they used against Utah State (UH did not wear that combination during their losing streak), Mac said:
"We'll ask the players, but they've got my vote. " (HSB)

HSB Note: "Attendance is down, and despite the win, the Fire Greg McMackin page on Facebook is up to 65 members (and a former UH player told me yesterday he's signing up as soon as he can find it)."
