--------------------- Quotes from the UH coaches -----------------------

About how Rodney Bradley's injury will end his season, Mac said:
"I feel terrible about losing Rodney Bradley. He will be gone for the season with a broken leg." (SC)

"No. 1, I feel terrible about losing Rodney Bradley. He'll be gone for the season, he's a big-time player and I just really feel bad about that." (HSB)

"I love the kid. ... He's one of our best players and he's a great kid. Shoot, it's terrible. It's devastating." (HSB)

"I feel terrible about losing Rodney Bradley. He'll be gone for the season and he's a big-time player." (HA)

About how Bradley's injury took a lot of emotion out of him, Mac said:
"It took an emotional steam out of me. I love the kid, and he's got a broken leg. He's not going to be able to play any more (this season), and he's one of our best players." (HA)

About how he thinks Bradley's injury was an accident, Mac said:
"I don't think anybody was intentionally trying to hurt him (Bradley). I know (Idaho coach Robb) Akey wouldn't stand for that." (HA)

Giving credit to Idaho, Mac said:
"I want to give Robb Akey and Steve Axman great credit. They outplayed us today, and they have an excellent football team." (SC)

Praising their offense, Mac said:
"I thought our offense played well, but we have to score more points." (SC)

About how they do not do their responsibilities on defense, Mac said:
"Defensively, we are busting. One guy will not do his responsibility." (SC)

"We had too many situations where a guy tries to make a play, but it's not within the scheme. That really hurt us today." (SC)

"They're good kids and they're trying as hard as they can, but they've got to understand they've got to play their responsibilities. A guy tries to make a play, but it's not within the scheme and it really hurt us today. We got outplayed by their offense because basically we weren't playing our defense. We have to do a better job of coaching." (HSB)

"The hard part to fix is it isn't the same guy every time. It's guys taking turns making mistakes. ... We're not good enough to have nine or 10 guys play the defense. We need 11." (HA)

Mac said that when one defender misses an assignment:
"it hurts the defense." (HA)

HA Note: "Assistant coach Dave Aranda said the Warriors had more assignment "busts" yesterday than in any other game the past two seasons."

About how their young players need to learn, Mac said;
"We have a lot of young players, but we have to learn." (SC)

About why Idaho was able to move the ball, Mac said:
"We got outplayed by their offense, because we weren't playing our defense." (SC)

About how all phases of the game contributed to the loss, Mac said;
"It's a team loss, no one unit lost us the game." (SC)

Praising Moniz, Mac said:
"Bryant got better between the first and second games, just as I expected him to." (SC)

About how they have a young team and are making mistakes due to their youth, Mac said:
"We're a young football team and we're making young mistakes." (SC)

"We're a young football team and we're making young mistakes right now. I'm devastated and feel terrible." (HSB)

About the timeout that was called at the end of the half, Mac said:
"I didn't call the timeout at the end of the half after we got a first down. I'm not stupid." (SC)

"I didn't call a timeout, absolutely not. That's why I was out talking to the official." (HSB)

"The thing is I didn't call the timeout. Why would you call a timeout when you have a first down? The official called the timeout and said he looked at me and I waved my head (up and down). But I didn't call a timeout. Absolutely not. I'm not stupid. Geez.

"That's why I was out talking to that official. I didn't call any timeout. It is absolutely stupid to call a timeout in that situation. The official said he looked over at me and I shook my head. That's his problem. And, then, the white-hatted guy couldn't turn it around. That's why I was out in the middle of the field.

I told the players I feel bad. I'm the guy in charge. We didn't win this game. That's my fault. I really feel that way. Blame all the other stuff on me but that one (the timeout) wasn't my fault." (HA)

HSB Note: "With less than a minute left, Bryant Moniz completed a pass to Greg Salas for 17 yards on third and 2. Although the clock stopped for the first down, UH was charged with a timeout. McMackin said he didn't call for the timeout, but the official said he did."

My Note: I actually didn't mind that timeout by UH because UH had the timeout to spare with so little time left in the half. What I *did* mind was UH letting 8 crucial seconds go by (from 60 second left to 52 seconds left) before calling timeout after a play that did not end in a first down...if UH was going to call the timeout anyway, why wait 8 seconds to do it?

Taking responsibility for the loss, Mac said:
"I am responsible for the whole loss." (SC)

"I want everybody to know that I take full responsibility for this loss. No players had anything to do with this loss. No other coaches had anything to do with this loss. Whatever mistakes we made I have to get corrected through my players and my coaches but I want everybody to understand that I take full responsibility." (HA)

Defending the fake FG call, Mac said:
"I still think the fake field goal was the right call." (SC)

"I thought we had it. We came pretty close to it. We obviously didn't execute it (well). I still think it was the right call." (HA)

Praising how Spencer Smith played in this game (game-high 12 tackles), Rich Miano said:
"It seemed like every time I looked up he was making plays, making tackles. Other than that play near the end, he was the guy in there making tackles, making plays. Not a whole lot went right for anybody today on our side today, but I thought, until the very end, he played very well." (HA)

About how Smith played a great game despite his mistake on 3rd-and-35, Miano said:
"The disappointing part was Spencer played his (butt) off the entire game. If we had one guy who played a good game, it was Spencer. He tried to make a play, he tried to make something happen." (HA)

------------------ Quotes from the UH players ----------------------------

About how he felt more comfortable in his second start than earlier this season, Bryant Moniz said:
"I feel more comfortable in my position." (SC)

About how their offense needs to improve, Moniz said:
"We are doing good things on offense, we just have to improve." (SC)

Asked about his TD run, Moniz said:
"They schemed us good, and they took away all our routes on that play. The last option was to run." (SC)

About scoring TDs, Moniz said:
"Touchdowns are contagious." (SC)

About how heartbreaking it is when they struggle in the red zone, Moniz said:
"When we go down there (to the red zone) and get only 3 points, I mean it's good to get points on the board, but it's also a heartbreaker." (SC)

"Same thing, different day. We came a long way from last week. We did improve, but that's not good enough. We have to put seven on the board, not three." (HSB)

About losing Rodney Bradley for the season, Moniz said:
"It hurts a lot. Rodney's a great player, a great person, a brother of this team. We're all family out there, so we're going to miss him." (HSB)

About how Bradley's deep threat ability helped them, John Estes said that Bradley:
"stretches the field for us. He's a home-run hitter." (HA)

About how they should have been ahead at halftime, Greg Salas said:
"We should have had the lead going into halftime, but you have to give credit to Idaho, they did a good job." (SC)

About how they can correct their mistakes, Salas said:
"We would be really down but for the fact that we know we can do things, and correct our mistakes." (SC)

Upset about Bradley's injury, Salas (Bradley's roommate during road trips) said:
"I was pretty upset. I felt bad for him. He was doing so well. A guy was diving at his legs, his foot was planted, and I saw it on his face. It was bad." (HSB)

"I was running right behind (Bradley) on that play I clear out and he comes underneath, so I saw what he was running and I was kinda following to, maybe, make a block. The guy (Idaho safety Shiloh Keo) was going low. He juked the guy and because he got juked he hit (Bradley) on the lower part of the shin just as his foot was planted. I saw the look (of pain) on his face and the way he was holding his leg. It was horrible. You don't want to ever see that happen to any player, let alone a friend and teammate." (HA)

About replacing Bradley and getting 3 receptions for 41 yards, Joe Avery said:
"It gave me an opportunity to play, but I never want to see anybody go down injured. I was just like, 'I have to step up because I'm not playing for myself, I'm playing for the team.' " (HSB)

About his 8-yard TD run from the 'Noke formation, Inoke Funaki said:
"The line did a great job and there was a huge hole. I was excited when I saw that room." (HA)

About how he had a lot of friends and family at the game, Leon Wright-Jackson (from nearby Pascoe, Washington) said:
"I had about 60 friends and family members. They were pretty loud. I could hear them." (HA)

HA Note: "Wright-Jackson had nine carries for 37 yards as UH's most productive rusher."

About how he could not get past LB Tre'Shawn Robinson after he caught the pass on the fake FG attempt, LWJ said:
"I thought he was coming flatter, so I could give him something quick. He kind of baited me to the 12th man, which is the sideline. It worked out for him, and it didn't work out for me." (HA)

About how it is embarrassing to lose to Idaho, a team that never beat them in the WAC before, Blaze Soares said:
"It's embarrassing to our program. Losing to these guys, it sucks. I never lost to them throughout my career. To lose to them my senior year, it's just an embarrassment." (HA)

About how they couldn't score in the red zone and couldn't stop Idaho, Blaze said:
"We couldn't finish the deal. The offense couldn't score in the red zone. The defense couldn't stop them. They came up with big plays." (HA)

About how Mac taking the blame for the loss, Blaze said:
"It's not his fault. He's trying to bail out the players. It's a team thing. ... The players are playing the games. If we don't do the scheme right, it's on us." (HA)

About how they need to learn from their losses, Spencer Smith said:
"We have to learn from the mistakes we make. We can't be sulking over a loss." (SC)

About how Idaho exploited their mistakes, Smith said:
"When someone messed up on defense, (Idaho) found the hole." (SC)

Praising Idaho's coaching and execution, Smith said:
"They were well-coached and they out-executed us." (SC)

About a mistake he made, Smith (who had a game-high 12 tackles) said:
"I was trying to make a play and it ended up costing us a big third down." (SC)

"I felt I played a good game ... maybe my best one — until the end. That last play stays in my head." (HA)

HA Note: "Hoping to give the Warriors the big defensive breakthrough they had lacked all afternoon, the junior from Marietta, Ga. tried to anticipate a play and got burned on a third-and-35 situation in the fourth quarter that allowed the Vandals a first down, prolonging a drive that eventually gave Idaho a 35-17 lead."

About how he guessed wrong on the 3rd-and-35 play, Smith said:
"I thought they were going to do an out-route and I started driving it. And they ran a post (route). I ended up catching up to him (Max Komar) but it was too late (for a 36-yard gain). I was just trying to make a play when we needed one. We hadn't gotten any turnovers and I really wanted to make a play to help us in that situation." (HA)

"I was trying to make a play, because I felt a play needed to be made. I was trying to make a play on the out route, but he ended up running a post. That was the story of the night. If a person messes up, they're going to find that person and expose him. They did to me on that one." (HA)

Really upset for his mistake, Smith said:
"Coach (Greg McMackin) says we lose as a team, but I put a lot of blame on myself for that one play." (HA)

About how their defense will be good when they can focus and execute their assignments, Smith said:
"We just all need to focus and do our assignments, and we will be a good defense." (SC)

About Bradley's injury, his roommate Tank Hopkins said:
"He's like my brother, man. I hated to see him go down. It hurt to see that." (HA)

About being beaten for the 60-yard TD pass, Hopkins didn't blame the lack of safety help:
"I'm going to put it on me. I wasn't disciplined on that play. I had my eyes in the wrong place." (HA)

---------------------- Quotes from the Idaho coaches -------------------

About how just because they are bowl eligible they aren't guaranteed a bowl game, Idaho head coach Robb Akey said:
"Now that doesn't mean we've got one. It just means we're eligible. Now we enjoy this victory today and, starting tomorrow, we start planning for win No. 7." (ID)

About going 6-1, Akey said:
"Being 6-1 means a whole lot. It means this team has done a lot of things a lot of people told them they couldn't do. It means we are another step closer to reaching some of the goals we set earlier in the year. What I appreciate most is the fact these guys have continued to work their tails off the entire we have been together." (ID, HSB)

"6-1 means these guys have come a long way. It means that they've done a lot of things that the people on the outside world told them they couldn't do." (ARG)

"Being 6-1 means a whole lot. It means this team has done a lot of things a lot of people told them they couldn't do. It means we are another step closer to reaching some of the goals we set earlier in the year. Now we enjoy this victory today and, starting tomorrow, we start planning for win No. 7." (IS)

''These guys have come a long ways. 'They are another step closer to some of the goals we've set. Win number six means we're bowl-eligible, but we don't have one (yet). What matters now is we enjoy the victory today then get in here tomorrow and get to work on getting number
seven.'' (AP)

About the 4 rushing TDs by DeMaundray Woolridge, Akey said:
"DeMaundray is a powerful back and he has been doing good things all season. It was a very good day for him and, while you attribute a lot of the success to him, certainly that offensive line deserves a lot of the credit as well." (ID)

---------------------- Quotes from the Idaho players -----------------------

About becoming bowl eligible, QB Nate Enderle (14-17 passing for 226 yards and a 60-yard TD pass) said:
''It's great for the fans, it's great for the seniors, for coach Akey and the coaches. It's a great start, but that's all it is. We need to keep playing good football. Nothing is guaranteed yet.'' (AP)

Giving credit to his teammates for his 4 rushing TDs, DeMaundray Woolridge said:
"They were team touchdowns. It was a team effort." (ID, IS)

"Our O-line played incredible. It was a team effort." (ARG)

"I thank my (offensive) line; they pushed hard. To get into the end zone four times is almost like a dream. We feel that we have a lot of prove to this conference and we want everybody to know that we're here to compete." (HSB)

Asked what people now think of his transferring from a Pac-10 school (Washington State), Woolridge said:
"They're probably thinking the Vandals are 6-1." (HA)

About how they wanted to use a power rushing game against UH, Princeton McCarly said:
"We knew Hawai'i had a fly-around defense. We wanted to come out and establish our physicality (with the three interior linemen) and run on them. (The tailbacks) all have a low center of gravity. We try to get behind (the blockers) and try to get yards." (HA)

Downplaying the importance of going 6-1, Aaron Lavarias said:
"I think 6-1 means a lot but at the same time it really doesn't mean anything yet. We aren't guaranteed a bowl game. It just means we have six games and can say good job, now we need to go get No. 7." (ARG)

About beating UH after UH blew them out in every game since Idaho joined the WAC, JoJo Dickson said:
"We owed them." (HA)

About how their players from Hawaii really wanted this win after getting blown out by UH previously, Dickson said:
"Coming from Hawaii, playing these guys who outscored us 167-47 or whatever, in the past three meetings, it means a lot. It means a lot to me and the rest of the team." (HSB)

About wanting to show UH that they should have recruited him, Dickson (a Baldwin graduate) said:
"I just wanted to have them notice that they made a mistake on a great athlete." (HA)

"I knew how I could play and I wanted to show them." (HA)

About how UH didn't call him until right before he left for his recruiting trip to Idaho, Dickson said:
"I got a last-minute phone call as I was leaving to come up here and they said maybe I could walk on or gray shirt (come in midterm the following January). I don't know if you call that being recruited, but I wasn't having it. I already had a firm deal here." (HA)

HA Note: "Dickson, a 6-foot-2, 229-pound junior, was in on six tackles, had one sack, two tackles for losses and recovered a fumble for the 6-1 Vandals."

About becoming bowl eligible, Robert Siavii (a Leilehua graduate) said:
"That's real big. That's what we've been working on since before the season even started. We wanted to become bowl eligible and we reached that goal." (HSB)

About the play that injured Rodney Bradley, Shiloh Keo said:
"I think he might have rolled up on his ankle, I'm not sure. I hit him right about shin level. My prayers are with him. He's a hell of an athlete." (HA)

"I think his ankle might have got jammed up and planted into the ground when I took a shot at him. You know, my prayers are with him. They go to his family, and to the rest of the Hawai'i team." (HA)
