Quotes about the Warriors in the Hawaii papers

HA Note: "When things were most dour for the University of Hawai'i football team Saturday, there was quarterback Bryant Moniz walking down the rows of his teammates on the sideline urging they keep their chins up, exhorting them to continue the fight. When time was running out on the Warriors, there was Moniz scrambling, slithering away from pursuers to launch passes."

Praising Moniz, one UH coach said:
"Whatever problems this team has, he isn't one of them." (HA)

HA Note: "Part-time pizza deliveryman to pay the bills until he lands a scholarship, Moniz is a full-time Warrior, dedicated to the cause. A few months ago he seemed buried so deep on the quarterback depth chart that it was unlikely he'd see anything more than mop-up duty, if that. Yet, he came to practice with a smile and enduring resolve to be ready, just in case."

About how Moniz was able to learn the offense without getting many practice reps when he was buried in the depth chart, QB coach Nick Rolovich said:
"You talk about guys learning from taking mental reps, he probably got more out of them than any quarterback I've ever seen. He's put in the time and the effort every day." (HA)

About how the team respects Moniz, Rich Miano said:
"Everybody wants to play for him. They respect him. Whatever the qualities are that make a leader and earn respect, he has them." (HA)

Praising the way that Brant Moniz played against Idaho and Moniz' leadership skills, QB coach Nick Rolovich said:
"I thought he played courageously. He's everything we need on offense as a leader, accurate, smart. He's composed. He's got a leadership quality where the team will follow him. I couldn't be happier with him." (HSB)

About how he'll make a full recovery from his broken leg and play next season, Rodney Bradley said:
"I'm going to rehab it, and then get ready for next season." (HA)

HA Note: "Bradley was taken to Gritman Medical Center, where he underwent surgery Saturday night. During the operation, a rod was inserted into his left leg to provide stability for the broken bone. Bradley said he was not told the specifics of his injury. But he said he has been assured he will be able to make a full recovery after undergoing a rehabilitation program."

About missing the rest of the season, Bradley said:
"It's frustrating, but injuries are part of the game. The only thing I can do is get better as fast as I can." (HA)

HA Note: "Bradley and head trainer Eric Okasaki remained in Moscow, Idaho. They are scheduled to return to Hawai'i tomorrow."

About how he will recover from his injury, Bradley said:
"Everything will be fine." (HA)

About replacing Bradley, Joe Avery said:
"I know they want me to fill his shoes. I have to play my game. He's a playmaker. I have to do what I can." (HA)

HA Note: "Avery, who has been timed running 40 yards in under 4.5 seconds, has spent the past couple of years adding bulk to his 6-foot-5 frame. He said he now weighs 195."

About how he's gained a lot of weight since he joined UH's program, Avery said:
"That's a big jump from what I used to be." (HA)

HA Note: "He also works extra sessions on his catching. Avery often can be seen using the JUGS machine."

Pleased to get a chance to play but unhappy at the circumstances that gave him the chance, Avery said:
"I didn't like how it played out, that Rodney got hurt. He's a good player." (HA)

About their longest losing streak since the 2000 season, Spencer Smith said:
"It's frustrating, but you can't think of what's behind you; you have to think about what's in front of you. You just have to learn from the mistakes we make and use it in the next game. We can't be sulking over a loss. We have to use this loss as another steppingstone." (HSB)

Asked about Rodney Bradley's status, Mac said:
"His dad is flying in. They put a rod in his leg. It was a successful surgery. It's a heart-breaking injury 'cause he's put so much into this program and such a great kid. And he's from Texas so he's a long way from home. I feel terrible about it. He's staying in the hospital -- he could be in there for up to a week." (HSB)

HSB Note: "The Warriors racked up 444 yards in total offense with quarterback Bryant Moniz throwing for 360 against Idaho. But Hawaii enters the week tied for 116th out of 120 FBS teams in red-zone efficiency at 63 percent. The Warriors' 27 drives inside the 20 have yielded 10 touchdowns and seven field goals."

About their red zone struggles, Greg Salas said:
"We keep leaving stuff on the field so much on offense. We felt we were moving the ball well. We just have to finish. We have to put together a complete drive and not stall out when we have opportunities in the red zone." (HSB)

About the state of their offense, Leon Wright-Jackson said:
"It's a work in progress. It was Mo's first start last week and I think he made quantum leaps today." (HSB)
