Quotes about the Warriors in the Hawaii papers

HA Note: "During what had been a mundane practice at Colfax High's field, linebacker Blaze Soares and offensive lineman Brett Leonard became entangled during a team drill. Then they scuffled. About 30 seconds later, peace — but not calm — was restored. What followed was the Warriors' most energetic practice of the past month. The Warriors are preparing for tomorrow's road game against Idaho. After each big play, teammates would congratulate each other with flying chest bumps."

Asked if the practice scuffle served as motivation, Mac said:
"Absolutely. You've got to have a little feistiness. This is a game of collisions. Sometimes you get collided with, and you're not really happy about it." (HA)

About how he and Blaze walked together to the bus after practice, Brett Leonard said:
"What happens on the field, stays on the field. (The scuffle) got people fired up. It was something we definitely needed." (HA)

About his scuffle with Leonard, Blaze said:
"That stuff happens when people are competitive. Brett's a competitive guy and I'm a competitive guy. Whatever happens, happens. We needed it. People got all pumped up. It actually worked better than we thought." (HA)

"We were just spicing things up a little bit. What you do on the field stays on the field. After we were done practicing we were all cool about it." (HSB)

Blaze said that the fight sparked the practice:
"after that it was like a Warrior practice. ... More adrenaline flowing, more hitting, more people flying around." (HSB)

HSB Note: "The next play ended with a jarring collision between cornerback Jeramy Bryant and running back Jayson Rego at the line of scrimmage."

Liking the spirited practice after the scuffle, Mac said:
"I like to see emotions. That's what we're trying to do, have fun, play football and you play with emotion." (HSB)

Told that Jake Heun tried to join in the fight without wearing his helmet, Mac said:
"If anybody would (fight) without a helmet, Jake would do it." (HA)

HA Note: "The Warriors were forced to practice at Colfax, on short notice, when Washington State and Pullman High turned down requests. The Warriors made arrangements yesterday morning. The Warriors will practice in the Kibbie Dome, site of tomorrow's game, for an hour
today."

About how Earvin Sione and he practiced with the first-team defense yesterday, Victor Clore said:
"I'm just another man in the spot." (HA)

Clore said that with 16 siblings:
"food is scarce sometimes. You have to battle for it." (HA)

HA Note: "Sione is a 2008 McKinley High graduate. He attended a local college the past academic year before joining the Warriors in August. It was initially believed Sione would have five years to play four seasons. But because he was a full-time college student during the 2008-2009 academic year, his NCAA eligibility clock triggered in August 2008."

About activating Sione this season instead of redshirting him, Mac said:
"He's a big, fast guy who can rush the passer. He's going to play." (HA)

HA Note: "Sione, who is 6 feet 5, said he has gained 30 pounds in the past year and now weighs 220. His target weight is 260."

About being able to practice again, Adrian Thomas said:
"It feels good. I had a few days off to try to get back to where it was. It's still a little bit sore there, but it's OK." (HA)

About staying in a hilltop hotel that is adjacent to a cemetery, Leon Wright-Jackson said:
"That's a little creepy." (HA),"

HA Note: "One of the assistant coaches jokingly nicknamed the area "The Shining." "

Looking forward to getting a chance to play again after starting the season at MLB, Mana Lolotai said:
"I was looking for some playing time and this is my opportunity. I have to take advantage of it." (HSB)

Praising Idaho, Blaze said:
"They're not 5-1 for nothing. They're doing things right these past weeks. ... They're a different team, a different identity." (HSB)

About how Idaho's stadium is within a 2-hour drive of his hometown of Pasco, Washington, Wright-Jackson said:
"It feels good, like I'm at home. It just feels good to be in this atmosphere." (HSB)

HSB Note: "Wright-Jackson said the number of family and friends expected to attend tomorrow's game numbers in the 60s, and he's looking to build on a solid performance in last week's loss to Fresno State. Wright-Jackson's 66 yards were a career high, but the bulk of his contributions didn't show up in the stats."

Praising how LWJ blocked and made his reads, RB coach Brian Smith said:
"He was pretty much perfect on his reads in the run game, was physical and had his best game protection-wise." (HSB)

About protecting their QB, LWJ said:
"I'm going to do what I can. If it's blocking I'm going to do that to the best of my ability and give (Bryant) Moniz some time to get rid of the balI. I was taught, even in pee-wee football, to be an all-around back. You have to be able to block and run the ball. I take pride in both." (HSB)

About taking his team to a nearby bowling alley when their charter was delayed last week, Idaho coach Robb Akey said:
"We took the team in there and said, 'one of the goals of the season is to go bowling, let's get a little experience at some bowling.' There was a little subliminal there, and it was a great way to kill time." (HSB)

About trying to help his team deal with their success, Akey said:
"We're controlled about it. We're going to play it one game at a time, but you know what, these guys have been told they're terrible for so long, now that somebody's patting them on the back, now that they're getting some national recognition as well as being treated positively around here, I want them to experience that. They've worked hard, enjoy the ride, there's nothing that says you can't. But again be careful with what that outside world says." (HSB)

About how his young team is experienced now because they played a lot as freshmen and sophomores, Akey said:
"You have to grow yourself out of it a little bit. Confidence is the biggest way to fix that. With experience comes confidence. We had a lot of youth, we still have a lot of youth. But quite a bit of our youth right now is experienced because they had to play a lot as true freshmen and true sophomores." (HSB)

About how they need to focus to beat UH, Akey said:
"We'd better make sure we've got all our focus on this particular ballgame. That is a damn good team we're playing this week. This group has not beaten the University of Hawaii, ever. So we'd better get after it." (HSB)
