Quotes about the Warriors from the Hawaii papers

About moving Richard Torres from nickleback to free safety, Rich Miano said that Torres:
"grades out consistently as one of our best players every game. You feel you have to get him on the field (more). He's smart, and he knows how to line it up. His role should expand, and it will expand." (HA)

HA Note: "Of UH's four most-used alignments, only the 4-3 base defense does not employ a nickelback. The Warriors are in the base about a third of the time. In the new plan, Torres would play free safety in the 4-3. When the Warriors use five defensive backs, Torres will play nickelback and Mana Silva will enter as the free safety."

About the 5'8", 175-pound Torres, Chris Tormey said:
"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog." (HA)

HA Note: "Torres, a sophomore, has gained about 25 pounds since joining the Warriors in January 2008 while improving his quickness. He said he lowered his time in the 40-yard dash from 4.8 seconds to 4.46."

About getting the starting MLB spot back after starting the season opener and not playing much since then, Mana Lolotai said:
"I'm excited to get back into the groove." (HA)

HA Note: "Lolotai had been taken out of the starting rotation while he learned the revised defense."

About how he understands the defensive system now, Lolotai said:
"I know the defense pretty good now." (HA)

HA Note: "Heun was head coach Greg McMackin's first recruit, in January 2008. Heun, who signed as power running back, did not play last season because of a herniated disk. He was moved to defensive end in spring practice, and then to middle linebacker. In the second game of this season, he shifted to defensive end."

About moving back to MLB now, Jake Heun said:
"Quarterback is next. It's good. I'm glad to be back. Iwant to help out. I'm trying to make an impact (at middle linebacker), and see what happens." (HA)

About being told yesterday morning that he was moving back to MLB, Heun said:
"It's a quick turnover around here." (HA)

About how Bryant Moniz earned a grade of 80% in the Fresno State game, QB coach Nick Rolovich said:
"There were probably four or five plays that brought his grade down. Other than those four or five plays — possibly six plays — I would say he played good, but not great." (HA)

HA Note: "Moniz received double-minus grades for two interceptions. The first came in the end zone, after the Warriors drove to the Fresno State 10."

Blaming his play call for Moniz' interception in the end zone, Rolo said:
"I take a lot of that blame for calling the play-action. I should have called the rollout, (so) he could have seen the flat. That safety came on the corner route." (HA)

Praising the way that Moniz read defenses, Rolo said:
"I came out feeling as good as I thought I would ever feel after a loss like that just because of the way he played and his presence on the field. His numbers weren't good. But he had a lot of drops. His accuracy was good." (HA)

About how he won't be cleared to practice until Wednesday, which means that he'll miss the Idaho game, Brent Rausch said:
"It feels good. I can throw fine, but it's not really up to me anymore." (HA)

About how he will rejoin the team in January after redshirting this season to focus on academics, Malcolm Lane said:
"For sure. Everything is going good. I'm happy about school. My motivation has shifted to school. School is fun for once. It feels good to be able to concentrate on one thing. I'm happy right now, but I miss my teammates and coaches. Ieven miss practices." (HA)

About how his defenders are playing too tentative because they are worried about making mistakes, Mac said:
"I think defensively we have to play a lot more reckless. They've just got to play like (Fetaiagogo) Fonoti and Blaze (Soares) play. They're not afraid to make a mistake. ... That's the last thing I tell everybody before we go on the field. Don't worry about making a mistake, I'm not going to yell at you, just make it full speed." (HSB)

About how they need to change their mindset on defense, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane said:
"On defense you have to have that mentality of kicking ass and having fun. These couple of games we weren't playing with that mentality." (HSB)

About moving the LBs around and moving Huen back to MLB, Mac said:
"We're trying to get depth because we've got so many injuries. We brought Jake back, and by playing guys at middle and outside it gives us more options." (HSB)

About how they improved against the run in the Fresno State game, Mac said:
"We're a little young and a little inexperienced and we got way better over one week playing the run, whether it looked like it or not. From a coaching standpoint, from analyzing it, I know we did." (HSB)

Focusing on the positives and not having time to deal with the negatives, Mac said:
"We're going to deal with the positives, and the negatives we're going to try to turn around. A lot of people are dealing with the negatives, I don't have time for that. There's a lot of pressure put on these kids by what a lot of people say, and it doesn't bother me because I've been in it long enough. ... I'm not a happy camper right now, because we're not winning and we've got to really work hard to turn that around. These kids know that, but I want them to have fun playing the game. I'll worry about it. I want them to have fun playing the game." (HSB)

About how Meatoga's injured ankle is hampering him, Mac said:
"He's our best tackle and he's trying to do it, but it's not healing." (HSB)

About how Austin Hansen could start at right tackle if Thomas cannot play due to injury, Gordie Shaw said:
"He's been practicing at tackle too, so he's been kind of a swing guy. He's ready for it. He's been wanting to play, so this could be his chance." (HSB)
