"I have a lot of confidence in Rolo. I recruited him from junior college (in December 1999). I've watched him ever since. He's got the heart and the brains and the work ethic. The whole staff helps him prepare during the week, and they give him some ideas. But Rolo is quick as heck. He's smart. And he made good calls on the field." (HA)
HA Note: "The Warriors arrived in Las Vegas yesterday afternoon. They will train here in preparation for Saturday's game against Nevada-Las Vegas. Kickoff is 5 p.m. Hawai'i time. McMackin gave the players the day off. The coaches were given a few hours of leave. Rolovich decided to play craps, winning $500 in the first rotation."
About how they will go over the Washington State film this morning, practice for two hours this afternoon, and give the players the game plan tonight, Mac said:
"We have a schedule for everything." (HA)
About how they brought several academic tutors for this trip and set aside several hours each day for studying and school projects, Mac said:
"This is a business trip, and part of business is taking care of the academic side. We want the players to know we take academics seriously. The players are here to get an education." (HA)
About how their players are not allowed to gamble or visit the downtown or Strip areas in Vegas, Mac said:
"The best way to put it is this is a business trip. It's tough to win on the road, so we're trying to make it as normal as we can and carry on a normal day." (HSB)
HSB Note: "The Warriors are holed up in Summerlin, a suburb miles removed from the temptations of The Strip."
About the schedule they have their players on, Mac said:
"We treat them just like they're going to school. So they have certain hours we want them to work on their studies and we have practice and meetings." (HSB)
HSB Note: "Any free time left will be spent on the grounds of the Suncoast Hotel, which comes equipped with restaurants, movie theaters and a bowling alley. There is also a full casino, but McMackin said it is off-limits to players, even those who are old enough to gamble legally."
About how he believes in the talent his players have, Mac said:
"Greg Alexander played like he can play and we can just get better in all aspects. I talked to the players, how I believe in them and how we have good players. We may have young players, but they're good players." (HSB)
About the restrictions on his players, Mac said:
"Do they want to win this game or not?" (HSB)
HSB Note: "I thought the team's security chief, Manny Rezentes, was kidding Saturday when he told me the team would be on "lockdown" here. But McMackin told Jason Kaneshiro and me yesterday that yes, the players are not allowed off the premises, except for practice. (Rezentes was joking, however, about putting up an electrical fence around the "compound.") No forays downtown or to The Strip."
About things the Washington State crowd yelled at their team, Aulola Tonga said:
"The crowd was really on us. They called (linebacker) Josh Rice 'Goldilocks,' and they kept yelling that (wideout) Joe Avery was too skinny. One guy yelled at me: 'I don't know what to say to you because I can't pronounce your name.' That was kind of funny." (HA)
About putting the Washington State game behind them and preparing for UNLV, Rocky Savaiigaea said:
"The past is done. The future is a mystery. We're living in the present. We're trying to enjoy the present. The present is our gift." (HA)
