Quotes before the Hawaii vs. Washington State game

DE = Daily Evergreen

Expecting UH to mainly pass the ball against their D like last year, CB CHima Nwachukwu said:
"I'm expecting their offensive philosophy to be the same with run and gun and try and stretch us out. So we're getting prepared for that." (DE)

About how they cannot afford to forget about UH's running game, co-defensive coordinator Jody Sears said:
"They want to throw the football, but at the same time, they do have a simple run game that's very effective, so we can't lose sight of that. But obviously, they want to throw the football downfield, so we need to do a good job of playing our coverages and playing tough, hard football." (DE)

About how the Warriors have a lot of speed on D, Washington State QB Lopina said:
"They're fast, and they fly around the field. We know they have a lot of new players on defense. They lost a lot of guys last year, but they played a good game last weekend." (DE)

DE Note: "This week in practice, the Cougars seemed to focus a good amount of their offense around the running game."

About their confidence in their running game, RB James Montgomery said:
"We're feeling pretty confident. We had a couple miscues in the first game, but we've had a good couple days of practice. I think we're ready to go and show something good on Saturday." (DE)

DE Note: "At the quarterback position, head coach Paul Wulff has announced that Lopina will start again, but redshirt sophomore Marshall Lobbestael will continue to alternate running the offense with Lopina."

About how their offense has made many improvements since their opener against Stanford, Lopina said:
"I think we have a little more swagger to us right now. We feel pretty confident. Offensively, I feel we're going to come out and have a much better game than we did last Saturday." (DE)

HA note: "It is feared that, pending a further evaluation, backup quarterback Brent Rausch has a fractured pinkie finger on his throwing hand and might be lost to the University of Hawai'i football team for the season. Rausch, who apparently sustained the injury in contact with a teammate's helmet in practice here Thursday, is scheduled to undergo a more extensive examination with a specialist next week in Honolulu, according to team officials."

About how they are trying to protect the warriors from the swine flu during this long road trip, UH team physician Andrew Nichols said:
"This is an 11-day road trip so we want them to practice good health. The Washington State situation has been a wake-up call for everybody that this isn't necessarily something that is going to hit in January. Schools that are in session now are already feeling it." (HA)

"trainers and staff will be more diligent about identifying people who may be sick and isolating them." (HA)

HA Note: "Nicholas said hygiene meetings have been held with the team to promote health, and hand-wash containers have been placed in team areas."

Mac said that UH has offered scholarships to "some" players in the Seattle area and that Chris Tormey has:
"already been to four of five schools (here)." (HA)

About the benefit they get for recruiting by playing in Seattle, Mac said:
"I think it is a great thing to play here (at Qwest) so the kids can see us play. There are some good players, Polynesian players here that we're interested in." (HA)

Mac said that their Seattle recruiting means that:
"we'd like to play the University of Washington as much as we can." (HA)

HA Note: "UH, which played UW in 2007, is scheduled to play the Huskies in Seattle in 2011."

About playing "Hawaii Five-O" and the UH fight song "Co-ed" while the Warriors were having their practice at Qwest Field, UH Cheer Squad coach Mike Baker said:
"We wanted to test out the sound system." (HA)

About having their walk through at Qwest Field, Mac said he wanted to show the players:
"the lines are all the same." (HA)

Mac said that by taking a trial run:
"it's not a shock. They know what they've got. They know how the turf is. We've punted the ball here. We've kicked the ball. It (won't be) the first time." (HA)

HA Note: "Last year, Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw paid for the UH cheerleaders to attend the road game against Fresno State. The Warriors won that game, and McMackin wanted the cheerleaders to perform at today's game."

About having the UH cheerleaders at this road game, Mac said:
"They're a part of our team. They had a lot to do with us winning that Fresno game." (HA)

HA Note: "Because of budget constraints, there was enough money to pay for the travel expenses for four cheerleaders. Na Koa, the Warriors' booster club, footed the bill. A fifth cheerleader paid his own way. Four alumni cheerleaders living on the Mainland agreed to perform today."

Wanting the band at the game also, Mac said:
"I wish we could bring the band." (HA)

HA Note: "Instead, the cheerleaders will use the Califone boombox. The speakers will face the 2,000-seat section reserved for UH fans."

About that boombox, Baker said:
"That thing can get really loud." (HA)

HA Note: "The Warriors appeared to be relaxed during the one-hour workout. They practiced special teams, and ran 10 plays during team drills."

About how many of their players will be playing in their first road game, Mac said:
"The biggest thing is we have a lot of newcomers and just like we had to grow and learn last week, now we have an away game we have to teach them to get through." (HSB)

About how they have focused theri D on Washington State's RBs Dwight Tardy and James Montgomery, Mac said:
"That's their strength. They change their plan for different teams, so it'll be interesting to see what they do and we'll have to adjust." (HSB)
