Quotes about the Warriors in the Hawaii papers

About the problems their secondary had in the UNLV game, Mac said:
"Obviously, we were exposed a little bit in the secondary." (HA)

About what the coaches saw during their film review yesterday, Ron Lee said:
"There were some good things and some things we need to work on." (HA)

HA Note: "The coaches were pleased with the improved play of the offensive line. Quarterback Greg Alexander had enough time to go through his read progressions. Slotback Kealoha Pilares, despite the after-effects of stomach-flu-like symptoms, had the best game of his career. Pilares also did well as the kick returner in place of Jovonte Taylor, who suffered a sprained ankle on the Warriors' second play of the game."

HA Note: "Fetaiagogo Fonoti, who started every game at defensive right end last season, has not played this season while recovering from a hyper-extended left kneecap. Fonoti can run straight ahead but has difficulty making cuts. He was on the past trip's 66-player travel roster. Because the Louisiana Tech game is a Western Athletic Conference event, the travel roster is reduced by two. Even if his availability is in question, Fonoti is expected to make that trip. Defensive end Paipai Falemalu also is hopeful of being available for the Louisiana Tech game.

Against UNLV, the Warriors had crafted a defensive strategy with Falemalu partially in mind. To defend against both UNLV's spread passing attack and run-option schemes, the Warriors wanted to go with a 3-3-1-4 defense. In the sliding scheme, linebacker Blaze Soares often moved up to the line of scrimmage as a stand-up pass rusher, and the nickelback — Aaron Brown or Richard Torres — acted as a linebacker. Falemalu is the Warriors' best pass-rushing defensive end in a three-man front. But he suffered a high sprain of his right ankle three days before the UNLV game."

About their goal of returning to Hawaii 3-0, Greg Alexander said:
"It would have meant a lot, but we didn't do it. So now we go home 2-1, and there are no could've been, should've beens. The reality is we're 2-1 and we let 3-0 slip away."

About getting over the UNLV game and preparing for Lousiana Tech, Greg Salas said:
"We'll get back, rest up, get back to work and get back to watching film, and move on to our next opponent. You're only allowed to mourn a little bit, so once we get back it should be out of our mind and we've got to move on to LaTech (HSB)

HSB Note: "Salas leads the country in receiving with 159.7 yards per game, while Alexander moved into the top spot in total offense after passing for 477 yards against UNLV. Alexander established career bests in each of UH's first three games and ranks second nationally in passing average with 411.33 yards per game and total yards with 1,234, trailing only Texas Tech's Taylor Potts. Rodney Bradley moved into fifth in receiving following a 189-yard performance, and Kealoha Pilares is tied for fourth in receptions with an average of nine per game."

HSB Note: "The Warriors enter the WAC season tied for 112th in the FBS in red-zone offense with nine scores in 15 drives inside the opponent's 20. Three fumbles inside the 15-yard line didn't end up hurting the Warriors against Washington State a week earlier. Settling for a field goal and missing another in the first quarter eventually factored into the outcome against UNLV."

About their offense worked well aside from their struggles in the red zone, Alexander said:
"We pretty much had everything we wanted. Our game plan was good. We missed a lot in the red zone in the first half. We can't be good 20 to 20. We have to finish drives." (HSB)

About trying to learn from the loss, Jake Heun said:
"We're just going to take this as a learning experience. We start WAC play next week and we're going to bust our (butts) back in Honolulu." (HSB)

About their struggles in the first half, UNLV assistant coach Keith Uperesa said:
"We just had to correct our mistakes, just keep playing. We made too many mistakes in the early going." (HSB)
