Feature story on QB Bryant Moniz (and a few Warrior notes from the Advertiser)

About working as a pizza deliveryman in Mililani part-time, Bryant Moniz said:
"It's the easiest job in the world. Just drive, and give the people their pizza." (HA)

About completing his only pass in the Washington State game, Moniz said:
"That's great. Maybe I can change positions so I don't have to throw the ball again and I can always be at 100 percent." (HA)

About how Moniz quickly understood their offense despite his limited reps, Alexander said:
"He stepped in and did a good job last week. He's 100 percent. You can't get any better than that. He's probably picked (up the offense) way faster than me and Brent did." (HA)

HA Note: "Moniz, a former standout at Leilehua High, attended Fresno City College in 2007. He moved back to Hawai'i after that. In January, he joined the Warriors as a non-scholarship player. Moniz said his family pays for his tuition and school expenses. Moniz uses his delivery job to help support his daughter, Cali."

About how Moniz is deserving of a scholarship, Mac said:
"Look at all of the (walk-ons) we've put on scholarship. If a player can help us win, why not scholarship him? Where are we going to go out and find a better quarterback than him?" (HA)

About going by bus to every road game at his JC, sometimes riding 9 hours, Moniz said:
"You appreciate the things you have here." (HA)

Praising Moniz, Mac said:
"We have a lot of respect for Bryant. He has such a great feel for the game, and he looks really smooth. I think he's an outstanding quarterback." (HA)

Alexander said that Moniz is so calm in the pass pocket that:
"he almost looks like he's bored in there." (HA)

Told of Alexander's comment, Moniz said:
"That's pretty funny. I guess playing football, you know you're going to get hit. There's no sense being worried about it. If you worry, then you're in the wrong sport. I have a lot of trust in the o-line." (HA)

About how he tries to focus on reading coverages and anticipating his receivers' breaks instead of the pass rush, Moniz said:
"I trust my offense. There are a lot of good athletes around me." (HA)

About having to miss another practice, John Fonoti said:
"It's very frustrating. I've been working hard — day and night. We'll see what happens." (HA)

Note: "Fonoti said he would like for the left knee to be at least 95 percent. He said he is at 85 percent."

HA Note: "The UH coaches have set aside time for recruiting this week. The Warriors reportedly are considering 10 Las Vegas-area prospects. The coaches will visit schools this week. One of the most intriguing is Liberty High. The area has been dubbed the "Ninth Island" because of the large Polynesian population. The Liberty High players perform the haka before games."

About practicing as a TE and LB for their scout team, offensive tackle Brett Leonard said:
"They put me on the field, I make plays. I help out where I'm needed." (HA)

About being assigned to defend Kealoha Pilares in one drill, Leonard said:
"Pilares had a step on me, but I was right there." (HA)

About how QB Omar Clayton's MRI showed that he suffered a sprained PCL in his left knee last week, UNLV coach Mike Sanford said that Clayton's availability depends on:
"how he does this week, and if (the knee) swells up. But he practiced hard, and he practiced well." (HA)
