Texas safety Darren Mickens gets an offer from the Warriors

About UH's offer, Mickens' mother Toni said:
"He's very interested." (HA)

HA Note: "It was the opportunity to practice on a grass field that brought the University of Hawai'i football team to Parkland High School here this week. But, thanks to several curious twists of fate, it is a well-regarded recruit, safety Darren Mickens, who will bring them back, national letter of intent in hand. Two days after a chance meeting on the football field where UH has been practicing in northeast El Paso, the Warriors yesterday offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder with 4.6 speed in the 40-yard dash."

HA Note: "Mickens, who will attend tomorrow's UH-New Mexico State game in nearby Las Cruces, N.M., as a guest of the Aggies, said he is being recruited by Colorado, Arkansas, Air Force, Arizona, Texas-El Paso and NMSU."

About UH, Darren Mickens (3.7 GPA) said:
"I like their program." (HA)

HA Note: "UH had originally considered practicing on the artificial turf at the Sun Bowl on the University of Texas-El Paso campus but, except for a brief Monday conditioning session and today's short walk-through, sought a grass field that more closely approximated that of Aggie Memorial Stadium, where tomorrow's game will be played."

About how Lane mentored Darren when they were football and basketball teammates at Hanau American High School in Germany while their fathers were stationed together (Lane a senior and Mickens a freshman), Toni Mickens said:
"Malcolm helped guide Darren and helped him a lot growing up. We're grateful to Malcolm." (HA)

"Malcolm was like a mentor to him, kept him out of trouble and told him what to do to keep his grades up." (HSB)

About the Mickens family, Lane said:
"They looked out for me, too." (HA)

About how he didn't know that the Mikens family had moved to El Paso until he saw Darren yesterday, Lane said:
"It's like that in the military. It's always nice to see people from the past, especially people like that because that's like family. He was one of my real good friends. His mom is a real good lady, she took care of me." (HSB)

About how Darren came to see him when Darren's coach at Parkland told him that UH would be practicing at the school, Lane said:
"He's filled out a lot since I last saw him. He's always been a good athlete and tall." (HA)
