Rich Miano promoted to Associate Head Coach
About promoting Miano to Associate Head Coach, Mack said:
"Rich is a young, bright coach and I felt during the season our defensive secondary was the most improved unit in our program. Rich is directly responsible for their success last season." (HSB)
About being able to coach at UH for so long, Miano said:
"In the world of college football, we take so much for granted. I feel blessed to be at my alma mater for this long, and hopefully a lot longer." (HA)
"It's an honor to work here. I've always told people, after playing pro football, (coaching at UH) is the only job in the world that I ever wanted. I'm very thankful." (HA)
HSB Note: "Miano, who will continue in his duties as head of the Warriors walk-on program and its NFL liaison, enters his 10th season mentoring the UH defensive backs. He is aptly suited for the auxiliary roles, as he made the Hawaii roster as a walk-on safety from Kaiser High School in 1982, and improved himself enough to be drafted by the New York Jets in 1985. He played 11 years in the NFL."
HA Note: "Miano will continue to coach the defensive secondary, coordinate the walk-on program, and serve as the liaison for pro scouting and all-star bowls. He also will remain active in recruiting. He recruited Colt Brennan, Adam Leonard, Leonard Peters, Isa'ako Sopoaga, Melila Purcell III, Tala Esera, Larry Sauafea and David Veikune. He also is co-founder of the Hawai'i Speed and Quickness Clinic, which has expanded to offering after-school programs throughout the state."
