Quotes from the local papers

Predicting where UH would end up in the first week of the BCS standings, Karl Benson said:
"They may move up or down a spot in the (coaches and media polls) but my guess is that the computers will push them to 18 or 20 in the BCS rankings remembering that the computers are one third of the rankings." (HA)

Asked where they would end up in the first week of the BCS standings, Colt said that he had:
"no idea where we'll be. All I know is that we have to keep winning games or it doesn't matter." (HA)

About how he went out to dinner with his wife Saturday night to celebrate their victory over SJSU, but since the TV was set to the Washington-Arizona State game and they play Washington at the end of their season, GM laughed and said:
"I ended up scouting the game. I guess I'm on a working vacation. You can never stay away from it." (HA)

About how the week off will benefit Blaze, who suffered a stinger in his shoulder like the one that forced him to miss their first 4 games, GM said:
"The week off is going to be good for him." (HA)

If he had to choose among his wins at UH, JJ said that their SJSU win:
"is the best one ever." (HA)

JJ added:
"eight years from now, I'll go back and think about them. I don't think of all of our big wins in terms of rankings. I just enjoy them." (HA)

Still feeling great about the win, JJ said:
"What a game. It was pretty unbelievable, that's for sure. It's been great for these kids. They have a lot of love for each other. They show it every time they get into these situations." (HA)

About the field conditions, JJ said:
"The conditions were the worst I'd ever been a part of. I felt bad for Colt. I kept trying to tell him if he doesn't get a grip on the ball, don't throw it down the field. He kept getting muddy balls. I said, 'You've got to take one of the short (patterns), and we'll take our chances (on deep routes) when you've got a good grip.' He couldn't get his footing, and he said he had no grip on the ball." (HA)

About how he believed they had a chance to come back in the game, JJ said:
"I knew we were going to get two more touches. I said, 'Guys, we've scored 21 points in under two minutes one time. Fourteen points, as long as we get the ball back (quickly), we'll do it.' You just have to keep trusting it. They all knew that." (HA)

Not worrying about their margin of victory, JJ said:
"Winning is the name of the game. You don't care how you win. Coming from behind, like we have, and overcoming all of the adversity at Louisiana Tech and San Jose, just makes for great teams." (HA)

About how they appreciate their fan support on the road, JJ said:
"It's amazing to me how many people are coming to see us play now. And not just from Hawaii. I just talked to a guy who came from Chicago." (HSB)

About how their fans at road games helps their team, Bess said:
"It's real comforting. It gives us a chance to really appreciate what we've got. How valuable we are to them and they are to us. It makes us feel comfortable. When there's a thousand fans, what seems like a million fans screaming at us, 'We hate you,' and then we see them smiling at us, shaka signs. I've noticed a lot more this year. With all the attention Colt's getting, it's putting us on the map. It gives us a chance to get some love outside of the state." (HSB)

HSB Note: "After Friday's 42-35 overtime victory at San Jose State, UH media relations director Derek Inouchi "made up a record." This was the first game in school history where three receivers caught 10 or more passes, Inouchi said. Ryan Grice-Mullins (14), Davone Bess (12) and Jason Rivers (12) set the mark."

About how they overcame the elements in the SJSU game, WR coach Ron Lee said:
"We had everything going against us. The weather was bad, the ball was wet. I can't remember playing in these kind of conditions, maybe ever. We dropped some early on and made some mistakes. The guys hung in there, battled." (HSB)

About how the elements and the need to come back at the end made the game fun, RGM said:
"That makes football fun. We were like little kids running around the yard. Twenty seconds left ... 10 seconds left .... gotta make a big play. We're little kids running around and having fun. The ball was like a beachball the whole night. I think I got one drop -- I didn't get my hands right." (HSB)

Agreeing with Colt that they have the best WR group in the country, JJ said (referring to Bess' TD catch in the SJSU game):
"Davone Bess made one of the most unbelievable catches I've ever seen. Those guys, Jason Rivers, all of them, they made some unbelievable efforts. It's a team game and those receivers can play." (HSB)

About how their offense wore down the SJSU defense, RGM said:
"What can they do? You've got four receivers who can all make big plays. We all made 'em, all throughout the game. Every one of us had a big play, a big moment, everyone had a touchdown. Everyone had that little catch that might have seemed little, but it was on third down. No matter who they try to move around on us it's not going to work. We proved that once again." (HSB)

About how their fought back in the game, RGM said:
All in all, we fought back and refused to lose. Refuse to lose and win all, that's our motto. Make a mistake? Let it go. One snap and clear. Like Coach Jones preaches. Once you get guys believing, confidence is a beauty." (HSB)

About the poise of their team, Ron Lee said:
"The thing is the guys are confident. They just execute under extreme conditions." (HSB)

HSB Note: "Ron Lee said Friday's thriller ranks right up with the most exciting games he's been associated with in more than 50 years of playing and coaching football."

About his INT return for a TD, Lowery said:
"We were able to make a big defensive play and continue the turnaround. It gave us a lot of momentum. But we couldn't stop them in the end." (HSB)

About his hit on the forced fumble late in the 4th quarter, Blaze said:
"The coaches finally let me loose this game and it felt real great, to be out there and be with my boys. ... I went crush him." (HSB)

About the TD he caught in overtime, Jason Rivers said:
"In my book, that was one of the biggest (catches). Our season could've been done." (HSB)

About how they never lost faith in themselves in the game, Newberry said:
"We believe in ourselves. We just kept believing, believing and we pulled it out." (HSB)
