Quotes from training camp
At the end of practice, linebacker Brad Kalilimoku was wearing an ice pack on his left knee.
About having to wear an ice pack on his left knee, Brad Kalilimoku said:
"I'm not hurt. I'm a champ. (The ice pack) is precautionary." (HA)
HA Note: "Although the Warriors attack out of a 4-3 base scheme, McMackin described Kalilimoku as a "No. 1 linebacker." Indeed, Kalilimoku has played well this training camp. He also has gained about 15 pounds."
About the 15 pounds he gained, Kalilimoku said:
"I've been stuck on 205 (pounds) for a long time. I always trained and worked hard. During the summer I went to Vegas, and I guess I had a lot of the buffets, and I was taking all of my (protein) shakes every single day. One day, I woke up, jumped on the scale, and it was, 'holy smokes.' " (HA)
HA Note: "In testing, he bench pressed 225 pounds 39 times, second best on the team. His maximum bench is 450 pounds — 50 pounds fewer than his brother Chad's best lift."
About wanting to match his brother's bench number, Brad said:
"My goal is to bench 500 one day." (HA)
Most of the Warriors were happy to check out of the dance studios known as the University Hilton.
Happy to be leaving the dance studius (also known as the University Hilton), Colt said:
"I'm excited to go back to my house. I miss it." (HA)
"You can only stay in those cots and in that room for so long. We had fun doing it, but it's been a couple of weeks. It's time to go home and go back to our normal schedule." (HA)
HA Note: "Since the start of camp, the Warriors slept 50 to a studio."
Newcomer Tim Grasso said that staying in the studios:
"helped in getting to know people, especially for me. The initiation was fun." (HA)
About keeping open the studios through Saturday, the last day of 3-hour practices, while lifting the midnight curfew, JJ said:
"If anyone wants to stay, they can stay." (HA)
Brad Kalilimoku lived in Kapolei and is planning to stay in the dance studios:
"My home is too far away. I'm going to stay over here. It's my senior camp, my last camp." (HA)
About remaining in the dance studios, RB Jason Laumoli said:
"It's close to the locker room and the weight room and the field. It'll help me be on time." (HA)
Happy that the morning practice was cancelled, saying his response was "Praise God", Desmond Thomas said:
"I thought it was a good chance to rest the legs." (HSB)
After their 2.5-hour afternoon workout, Thomas said:
"We have to pick up the tempo. We can't afford to take a day off, we were flat." (HSB)
About Desmond Thomas and Keao Monteilh, JJ said:
"Both of them have done good things. Desmond has made a lot of good plays to the ball." (HSB)
About how they won't decide for awhile which side their starting tackles will end up at, JJ said:
"Keith looks good on the left. We could keep it that way. Both of them need to be comfortable on both." (HSB)
HSB Note: "Flossie turned out to be a flopsie, but June Jones didn't want to take a chance. The Hawaii football coach was also concerned about ripping up the Warriors' grass practice field and causing unnecessary injuries, so he canceled the first of yesterday's two practices."
About the film session they had in the morning instead of practice, Wes Suan said:
"The film session was very good for us. I felt like my guys stayed pretty sharp." (HSB)
About his plan to split the reps between LWJ, KP, and Farmer, JJ said:
"Those three will all play about the same." (HSB)
Happy to be leaving the dance studios, Sol Eliminian said:
"We're glad to get out of there. Cockroaches and stuff." (HSB)
