Quotes from training camp
After participating in his first full UH practice, Calvin Roberts said:
"The first day was good. I'm a little sore in the legs. I'm feeling good about myself." (HA)
About how he spends at least 2 hours each day reading the defensive playbook, Roberts said:
"There's a lot to learn." (HA)
About his injury situation, Adam Leonard said:
"It's not that bad, but we'll see." (HA)
Not concerned about the LBs sitting out of practice with minor injuries now, JJ said:
"They know what to do. They'll be all right by game day." (HA)
About switching Steinhoff to RT and AhSoon to LT for the last 2 practices, DM said:
"We're looking at different combinations to make sure we're doing the right thing before we etch it in stone." (HA)
Feeling better suited to RT, Steinhoff said:
"On the left side, it was tougher for me because of the sets. On the right side, I feel my sets are better. I feel I can stone them better and keep the side more solid. It's a lot better for me." (HA)
AhSoon, played LT the past 2 seasons and said the:
"left is good." (HA)
About how Steinhoff and AhSoon are their best tackles, DM said:
"They're the clear front-runners. June wants to give them the best chance to be successful and which side they feel best on. He said, 'Let's try this for four practices.' I think it's the best the way it is now (with Steinhoff on the right and AhSoon on the left). That's just my feeling. I could be wrong. I was wrong once ... in '78, I think." (HA)
About how he has been labeled the Joker by his teammates, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane said:
"They say stuff, but I don't mind." (HA)
HA Note: "Kiesel-Kauhane, in fact, is playing the position of joker. When the Warriors switch to the Oky scheme — essentially a 3-4 alignment — Kiesel-Kauhane becomes the joker, which is a blitzing inside linebacker. It is a position that fits Kiesel-Kauhane's strength and quickness."
About Kiesel-Kauhane, GM said;
"He's worked hard and he deserves a chance to play more." (HA)
About how ESPN shot video of him spearfishing in Kane'ohe Bay, Colt said:
"I shot a tako. Then I shot some fish, too." (HA)
HA Note: "Brennan said one of his teammates baited the tako to come out of a hole in waters that were 15-feet deep. He said he stabbed it while it was ascending."
Hoping to return for the Warriors' 4th game of the season, A.J. Martinez (badly injured in a snowboard accident during Christmas break said:
"I'm doing all kinds of workouts now. I'm not doing any drills. I'll be good to go in about a month. I don't want to rush anything. I'm looking long term, and not just football-wise." (HA)
HA Note: "Martinez said he is on track to earn a bachelor's degree in May. After that he plans to work in real estate or insurance."
About how he did not compete in contract drills in yesterday's morning practice because of tightness in his back, Bess said:
"It's nothing, dog. It's minor." (HA)
