Quotes from the first day of camp
Satisfied with the team's conditining at the start of training camp, JJ said:
"A lot of the big guys, more than ever before (did well)." (HSB)
Happy with how 74 of the 100 Warriors completed the 220s in the required time, Mel deLaura said:
"This showed the guys who took things seriously." (HA)
About how he wanted more than 74 to pass their 220s, deLaura said:
"I expected a little more. If they follow the (training) book we give them, they slam it. But a lot go their own way and that's what happens." (HSB)
About how more than a dozen who failed to meet the requirements were in their first UH training camp, deLaura said:
"A lot of them thought this was like high school, and they didn't really do what they needed to do." (HA)
About how he ran 8 of the 220s instead of the 6 that he was required to do, Ray Hisatake said:
"It's kind of an initiation. When I got to six, I felt all right and I felt I had to push those last two. My teammates didn't quit on me, so I wasn't about to quit on them." (HSB)
About how he's 313 pounds now after being 338 pounds in spring training, Hisatake said:
"I feel healthier, I can move better. I feel great." (HSB)
About how he passed his 220s for the 3rd consecutive year, Colt said:
"No problems." (HA)
About passing the 220s, Jake Patek said:
"I'm probably not sweating because I didn't drink enough water." (HSB)
About the guys who didn't pass their 220s, Patek said:
"Mainly the guys that dropped out was the freshmen, the guys that didn't really know what it was about." (HSB)
HSB Note: "Or, as Brennan put it, the guys who sit at home eating hamburgers."
About how it is easier to push yourself when you are with the team, Patek said:
"But other than that, guys were doing pretty good. I think Coach Mel (deLaura) was saying we did better last year. A lot of guys had gone home for the summer ... and you know how it is, you train by yourself you're not getting the same kind of training as you would if you were training with everybody else. It's not like everybody's pushing you, you have to push yourself. That's kind of hard to do." (HSB)
About the start of training camp, RGM said:
"It's like cracking a shell. Now finally it's here, it's like, hey, now it's time to go to work, time to cook, time to eat." (HSB)
About how he worked hard all summer, Colt said:
"I was working out the whole summer. If you're running and lifting and going to the beach, your lifestyle has you outdoors and working out a lot. It makes running easier. I'm a skinny kid. I don't mind running." (HA)
HA Note: "DeLaura said Brennan's approach matches the intent of the conditioning program. When deLaura joined the coaching staff in 2000, he wanted to create a test that would measure a player's offseason work. He consulted with assistant coach Wes Suan, who previously served as offensive coordinator at Linfield College. Suan recalled how Linfield players were required to run 10 sprints of 240 yards on the first day of training camp."
About choosing 220 yards for UH, deLaura said:
"We decided to cut it down to 220 over here." (HA)
About the 10-week training program he made that emphasized sprints, resistance work and hill climbing, deLaura said:
"Every day is a different workout." (HA)
About how his program specifies what the players do on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, deLaura said:
"They run on their own on Wednesdays." (HA)
About how they have to take days off from training, deLaura said:
"We don't want them to train every day because your body has to recover. You can't wear it down. This program is not strenuous. But if you follow it, you're going to get into shape." (HA)
Discouraged by the players who chose to ignore the workout program, deLaura said:
"It doesn't make sense to give some guys books if they're not going to follow them. It seems every year we have people who want to do other things. We made the test. We know what it takes to pass the test. If you want to go out and do something else, that's fine. You can tell who went on their own." (HA)
HA Note: "There are 105 players on the training-camp roster. Five did not attempt the 220s yesterday."
About how he was excused from the 220s because it would have been stressful on his right knee (he had surgery in June to repair a torn meniscus), Adam Leonard said:
"Everything is good. I can run. My knee is fine." (HA)
"It's just a precautionary thing and my knee should be OK. I'll be practicing soon." (HSB)
About why they didn't want Adam to run the 220s yesterday, GM said:
"We're being cautious. What does it prove to have him go out there and sprint on the first day? He's a great player. We know what he can do." (HA)
HA Note: "Leonard, who will practice today, said he will attempt the 220s later in camp."
Impressed with the condition their playes are in, GM said:
"I'm so proud of the guys who worked here all summer. They really took it seriously. It certainly showed." (HA)
About how he completed all 10 laps, but not in the specified time limits, Erik Robinson said:
"I'm getting in shape. Around that eight mark, I was thinking about hitting the wall. But I knew I couldn't quit. The coaches had faith in me to bring me out here. I knew I had to keep pushing and finish. I'm no quitter." (HA)
About opening camp at LT after practicing at RT most of spring training, Steinhoff said:
"I don't mind making the change. I'll play anywhere. If coach wants me to play on that side, I'll stick with it." (HA)
About their new starting tackles, Steinhoff and Ah Soon, Colt said:
"Keoni was a guy who played well last year. I've always heard coach Jones say a lot of nice things about Keith Ah Soon. He has a bright future. We have plenty of offensive linemen. It's finding the right guys in the right positions and the right mesh. As far as talent and numbers, we've got plenty of that." (HA)
About how they are motivated by BSU's success last year, GM said:
"The best thing was to watch a team from our conference do that. I can sense the excitement in our players, the enthusiasm." (HA)
"A lot of the big guys, more than ever before (did well)." (HSB)
