Injury update (including JJ and GM getting run over)
About DE John Fonoti sitting out of practice at least until Monday, with a possible hairline fracture in his left heel, JJ said:
"I told him to stay out until Monday. No sense pushing it now. He'll get a week of practice (before the Sept. 1 opener). We'll be OK." (HA)
About how he'll redshirt this season, freshman Kevin Konrath said:
"We have some awesome linebackers. It would be kind of foolish for me to waste a year." (HA)
About attending practice yesterday, A.J. Martinez said:
"I'm back in uniform. I'm doing a little fieldwork, just rehabbing. Hopefully, by the end of next week or the week after, I should be full bore. Hopefully, I'll be at game speed in two or three weeks." (HA)
About being knocked down when Estes and DT Josh Leonard were entangled during a scrimmage, GM said:
"I got up quick." (HA)
HA Note: "He said he felt a "pop" in his surgically repaired right knee."
About his knee, GM said:
"I've got titanium in there. I'm fine." (HA)
About being knocked down, GM said:
"They were playing fast, which is what I like. I'll be back, but I'll be farther from the action. I'll be watching with binoculars." (HA)
About JJ getting knocked down during a passing drill, GM said:
"At least it took two big guys to knock me down." (HA)
After he got knocked down during practice, JJ chuckled and said:
"I got the best of that one, I think. He only weighs 120, 150." (HSB)
About GM being knocked down, Markus Owens from the media relations department joked:
"He's doubtful for today, probable for tomorrow. You know I can't tell you about injuries." (HSB)
HSB Note: "The defensive coordinator was OK, despite the yells of "Trainer!" Then the rest of the UH staff had some fun replaying the tape of McMackin's misadventure yesterday afternoon."
About being knocked down, GM said:
"I got up quick, didn't you see? It took two or three of them to get me. I just got too close and our guys are playing fast." (HSB)
Happy with their defense, GM said:
"I don't like to compare to the past, but this defense has really good depth and the guys are having fun playing. They're doing what they're asked of, playing responsibly and sound. They're playing smart and fast." (HSB)
